hello, I am looking at purchasing a 1440 combine, I was wondering how these machines were for reliability and what their reputation is. I see many sell much cheaper than 1460's, is this just because the size difference, or was there some problem with them? Also, how do they perform on hill sides compared to conventional machines? Thanks

Thanks for the comments guys, I will be running 4 Row Narrow on whatever I end up getting. Does anyone have experience with the rotor machines on hill sides such as SW PA? Would be used for ~120 bu corn and a 15" head in 40 bu beans.

Thanks Again

Hillsides it should work much the same as conventional. Dependable and a lack of moving parts; yes. I run a 1420 and lack power at times on reasonably flat land, for your hills a 1460 might be a better power choice. 1460 is probably priced a little higher for this reason.

Hi A 1440 is a 6 row machine in mo 150 bu corn easy but if im going to buy a old used machine why not a 1480 bigger all the way around for same price . Or better yet for another 5000. get a 1680 and have a real combine you can get them for 10 to 20 thousand my opinion

the 1440 is a great four row machine. same size rotor as the 1460 just less power to turn it.

The 1460 is a better machine... I've run both side by side.

The 1440 has no turbo on the engine and will lose power on hills - never a good thing.

The 1440 has weaker/smaller final drives and a weaker/smaller rear axle and wheels too.

The 1440 grain tank is also smaller, because the smaller drive components can't handle the extra weight.

You can get a decent 1460 for less than $10,000 these days and they are one great machine. My brother-in-law put over 7,000 hours on one before they traded it in - only real problems were the hydro starting to get weak and jumped out of 2nd gear.
