Farmall Super H Behaving Badly

Hello all, I have a Farmall Super H. This summer it started behaving badly, it was running poorly and leaking gas from the bottom of the carb. I put a kit in it and it seemed to help for a while with the leaking, but the tractor did not have its former power and it started leaking again. Then it got to the point where it would not start at all. I've had the carb off and on maybe 5 or six times, adjusting the float and drop levels, and it's still leaking.I think what's going on is the little rod that holds the float is coming out allowing the needle to fall out. I have tried crimping it, but it doesn't work. Has anyone else had this problem and figured out a solution? Also, are the Super H carbs different from standard Hs? I have the books on this tractor and the carbs shown look different than mine. Any help will be most appreciated. Thanks, Chris

Hi. I fully agree with the posts below; the float and the needle should be made mechanically correct first. The functioning of the float and needle can be observed and adjusted as necessary by suspending the carb (with bowl removed) over a glass jar as shown in the link provided. Don't know the correct height for the float for a Super H; look it up in the manual or ask on this board.

Hello again, first thank you all for your replies! The weather has been too cold/snowy to work on my tractor too much but today I did the float check with a glass bowl as Hendrick had suggested (what a neat idea) and everything seems to work correctly. I then put the carb in a vise and put fuel to it and it seemed to be fine, the needle seated and shut the fuel off. However when I put the carb back on the tractor, it tries to start and then fuel spurts out of the bottom where the air cleaner pipe goes. This is driving me nuts! Any ideas? Thanks, Chris

If the needle is laying in the bottom of the bowl then crimping to post should fix that.

When you get it back together, shake the carb up and down a litle and you should hear the float moving up and down if it is not stuck on anything.

Also look at the float where the needle rides to see if there is a depression there. That would keep the needle from closing all the way at the right adjustment. If so you can get a new float or try to flatten out the depression or change your adjustment to allow for it.

After you get your carb fixed, a new set of spark plugs might help. When plugs get really soaked, they sometimes never fully recover.

if its behaving badly, give it a stern talking to !!! like rusty said, squeeze the post with the pin out. also check if the float is dragging along the side of the bowl, may be bent just a tad off and it hangs up, keeping the float open. check to see if the bowl gasket is sticking in too far, it can catch the top of the float and hold it open also.

Does it leak from the bottom while running or just setting ?

The super H carb is totally different from the H carb. The super H carb is more like an M carb. Yes, you do need to squeeze together the little bracket that the float pin goes through, but you need to do the squeezin' before the pin is in place.
