Well I have the rails apart and see the slots for the shifter vary in size. Should they all be the same?

And then how wide should the end of the shifter be? The closer to the slot size will mean less play in the shifter handle, correct?

How many of you want to go in on buying a new one for only $240 from CaseIH to see what the original width of the end is

Randy - The slots in the 3 shifter rails should all be the same size. (Obviously the .875 shifts the gear(s) that were used the most on your tractor....)

----

You could build-up (weld) then grind the .875 slot to bring it closer to the others. However you'll need to be very careful that the built-up slot is centered with the other 2 when all the rails are re-installed. Otherwise you'll wind up with a "notchy" neutral gate.

I had a similar problem with my Super H. However I simply built-up then ground the tip of the shift lever by trial and error until I got it where it shifted smoothly. The fact the shift rail slot sizes were all slightly different didn't seem to matter.

----

Incidentally that's a slick digital caliper. I bought one just like it to gage/match cutter lengths I sharpen chain saw chains....it works great!

I lucked out and found a 35 yr old guy at an independent tractor repair shop (they fix mostly IH & IHC) and he welded the shifter for my H. The guy was so good that the shifter fits perfectly. Lucked out on cost, too.

If it were mine I would put them in the cover with the detents in the Neutral position and look at them to check true alignment and variability of the slots. I would then make a chart to add material to each as needed so that they all measure .750 (maybe .770). Weld em up and put them in. The tip needs to be thought of at an angle in the rails, not square as shown being measured. I would put the max diagonal measure at about .6875. I would then assemble the cover and shifter, and put it through its paces to assure it will shift and retain a clean neutral. JimN
