yes you can check it with plastiguage . proper way is to have engine out and upside down on stand .unbolt cap and install plastiguage. use 3 pieces 1 on top and the other 2 90degrees from the top one . then torgue to spec. and remove cap if your crank is out of round it will show here.new spec would be like .0015 to .002 for example.your used readings could be .002 up to .008 and all 3 srips showing diff. readings. doing this you will see how mu ch wear is on the crank and tell the story if it has to come out and get ground.hope this helps you out.thats why i am looking for a WK40 engine. the crank has like .009-.012 wear on it .just impossible to find a set of main brgs.unless i get the old ones rebabbited, but thats big money.anyone have a set let me know.

I have a set of standards but that wont help. I may have some worn 020s that could be installed and then line bored to 010 or what ever your crank cleans up at.

Yes, but take the weight off of the crankshaft so you don't get a false reading.

Plastigauge is a thread of polymer that is squished in the clearance of a journal bearing to chack clearance. (It assumes several things are true and is good only if the journal is round and straight, and th rod (or cap on the main) is round and straight, and the insert is correct and has proper crush).
The crankshaft weight is heavy enough to flatten the material and give a bogus reading unless the crrank is held up into the block. during gauging.
Remember it is a guestimate of roundness and servicability, not a great way of measuring clearance or servicability on used parts. JimN

The problem with a mic is that the crank must be out of the block. If it was running well, has oil pressure, and no knock, putting bearings back in it that match the inserts removed will work fine. The shell should be marked with Std (standard), or .002 etc. undresize. JimN

I have a set of .002" bearings that we tried to put in a '54 SMTA. The old ones were marked .002" so just replaced them. For what ever reason they tightened up too much on the outer edges of the new bearings and the crank was too tight to turn over. So, we pulled the crankshaft out, took it to the local machine shop and had it reground. Now with 010" undersise bearings it turns freely.
Make an offer if you are in need of some .002" bearings.
