Beware using hydraulics in very cold weather

A week or so ago I was going to use my 300u after a very cold spell and none of the hydraulics worked. Think I got it fixed tonight.
My guess is the hydraulic fluid (a generic for hy-tran which I purchased from my Case/IH dealer), got so thick that when the pump tried to draw fluid it crushed the strainer in the hydraulic reservoir, as it couldn't get hydraulic fluid through the strainer.

Anyhow, straighened out the strainer and put in lighter hydraulic fluid and all works again. Just wanted to through out a word of caution as I haven't seen this problem discussed on here.

I notice when I Shovel snow with the 2000 Loader on my Super M in colder weather it makes a "grinding" sound. Finally found out that I need to "warm up" the hydraulic fluid before use, so I'm looking at buying a magnetic heater for the oil reservar to keep it at least 50 degreese in colder weather. -David Goode Coggon, IA

You haven't seen it discussed on here because it isn't much of a "problem". People use hydraulics in sub-zero temps all the time.

Just keep the oil and filter/screens clean.

Where did you get "thinner" hydraulic fluid? HyTran only comes in one viscosity.

It's true hydraulic fluid, like any oil, gets thicker in the cold. But if it gets so thick that it damages the system, it's not the right kind of oil.

I purchased the low viscosity-winter weight hydraulic oil at Farmers Union - Cenex. I know it isn't equivalent to hy-tran, but I needed something that would work, NOW! Hope I do not live to regret it.

You need to use Hytran or HyGard. Hal

I kinda doubt that it was the thickness of the fluid alone. You may have had some condensation in there that froze up also. None the less I'm glad you got it all straighted out.
