What should I use to build up the end on my shifter lever. I have a torch & mig and want to know if I should use steel or bronze or something else when I build it up. I am an amateur welder, so it may take me a few tries

Like any job, preparation is the key. Put that shifter in a vise and get your die grider or hacksaw and cut a groove about 1/16 inch deep in the center of the edges you are going to build up. This might be a job for a Dremel tool I own and have never used.

I don't own a stick welder, so I will use the mig.

Thanks Guys!

Randy

6010 root pass, grind clean, overlay with 7018.

I always just built them up with a stick welder. The same sticks we used for eveything else, I don't know, they are tanish grey and about a foot long. I like 5/32 the best. Anyhow, I sent you a pic of what a good shifter looks like.

I agree with using steel. 6013 or 7014 will work. Mig may use milder filler than SMAW. JimN

Randy - On my Super H I used the arc welder and 6013 rod to lay a bead on both worn faces of the shifter tip. Followed this with a bit of quality time with a 4-1/2" grinder, alternately smoothing and test fitting until the tip slipped in easily and it shifted smoothly.

This was 6 or 7 years ago - the tractor still shifts great.

i would use the mig welder. brass would wear out a lot quicker.
