Remove all plugs so you can turn it over easy. Now when the piston is coming up to TDC remove the cap and look to see if the rotor is pointing at the post on the cap going to #1 plug. I am assuming that you have a mag.The rotor will point to the tower and when you hit TDC it will snap.Sometimes when the points are changed they get the rotor out of time so ir doesent line up on the tower of the cap makes for hard starting. I have 7 A,BN and B with mags cant beat them for starting.

The procedure differs from magneto to distributor. Let us know which.

I've found it helpful to make a mark of some sort up at the front of the engine to save crawling under the tractor to get to TDC each time. Crawl under and line up the timing marks as Bob says. Then use a marker and make a line on the back side of the belt pulley and one to match it on the timing cover. If you can't or don't want to mark the tractor, get some tape to stick on and make the marks on the tape. You'll still have to make sure you're at the top on compression, but it'll save having to dive under the tractor sebbenty-lebben times to line it up.

If has a mag, and you are crank-starting it, spark MUST NOT occur BEFORE TDC.

As you probably know, spark occurs when the impulse "snaps".

The timing marks are visible by removing the cover AT THE VERY BOTTOM of the clutch housing.
