I am in the middle of going through the steering box on my A. I have it all taken apart but cannot figure out how to get the top bearing off the sector gear shaft. Snap ring is off.The bushings are wasted on both ends of the steering box, are these hard to come by, dealer item maybe?

I would prefer to do this right after wrestling the front axle off, bushings, seals, gaskets. I dont want to throw the torch to it if i dont have to.

I have read in the archives that bearings and such are not a problem, but i would like to change out all bad parts while it is apart. Thanks Chuck Davis

Thanks Gene, The top bearing is the worse of the two.The sector has zero slop on the shaft,i was quite suprised by that after reading through the archives.

I think most of my problem is in the steering gear arm. It is worn badly,so much so that it was beyond tightening.

I think i am going to try to weld it up and use a die grinder to reshape it. I dont know if that will work.

From what i have read i dont know what other options i have, as it is the old style front with adjustable tie rods.

All parts are avail from dealer. Is the bearing in good shape it not needs to be changed of the several i have repaired in the last few yrs only one needed the new top bearing. It should come offmaybe need a puller. I would replace the key and all the bushings. Now the bearing on the end of steering shaft i would make sure it was a new one it doesent take much play in that one for steering wheel play So two bushings, two bearings, two seals and key and gasket your steering will be like new again. If the ball ends on draglinks are egg shaped a little work with calipers and 4in disc sander will make them round again.
