on the ih 340 tractor it has a gas c-135 engine . did i time this ok, i first got # 1 cylinder up on compression stroke, then found where rotor was pointing and hooked that plug wire to number 1. i started the tractor and seem to run a bit rough, i then turned the distributor until the motor sounded good. i did not have timing light, so have no clue how close iam, i can say the engine sounds nice at all levels of rpm's thanks for any input. Jim Gordon

Engines will overheat if timed too slow also. I'd buy a good timing light. You will use it more than you think.

I listen to them and if they sound good idling I turn them (retard)back until they sound like they have a slight load. Or until you hear a change in the exhaust noise.

I've timed a lot of truck motors this way and had good luck. I don't know if his opinion was correct or not, but an old mechanic once told me that after a timing chain got a little worn, a light didn't mean much anyway. If it runs good and the valves don't rattle under load, you should be good to go.

A lot of folks didi it that way for a lot of years and made out just fine.

You might find you need to tweak her some once you put a load on her. Just keep an eye on your temps for a short bit to make sure you don't have it too far advanced. If so, retard her a bit and check her out again.

The advice from the other guys is also very good. The link below appears to be from a guy who works on Volkswagen's but his explanation of timing and its effects is generic. Thought yuo might find it helpful.
