Monday I cleaned up some old pipe, metal and batteries and took it to the scrap yard. We were lined up waiting to get on the scales. I saw a trailer with mixed iron, dump rake and old horse drawn mower back up to crane. I watched them grab 'em with grappling claw and try to squeese them smaller. A ground attendent wrung the seat off the rake and mower and I was glad some one saved a small part. I thought of all the human sweat and time that had been used up on those 2 seats. Boy if we could archive all the thoughts of those guys as they rode them across the field. The mower has to be a IH because every time he grabbed the bar to crush it over, it would spring back to position, then he just flung it on the pile. Off to one side was the chassis of a JD model A or B sitting there like a sheep cowering in the pen at the slaughter house. I have never in my life seen so much scrap being processed , Lord only knows where it is going. I guess with the rate of $6.50 per 100# we are going to see more artifacts leaving.

Yup - - a lot of materials are going to China and India, but a lot of that material is being reprocessed and sent back here.

You can look at it that way, or you can look at it this way:

Those implements were likely beyond usefulness and repair, just giant clumps of rust and brittle steel. Either they get recycled into new steel, or they rust away to nothing. Frankly, I feel that it's more noble for these old pieces of equipment to become part of something new. At least they'll "live on" in some way.

and quite frankly, I don't think China is out for military dominance. There's too much money to be made in what they're doing now, plus it has the added benefit of creating paying jobs for their people that don't involve killing people, getting shot at, and dying. They don't have to occupy an "enemy" nation. The "enemy" nation provides the supply lines and supplies.... History has shown us that military conquest is not practical, profitable, or sustainable. Looks like China and India have that figured out. Too bad we don't.

Not trying to be belligerent, myself, but I think this is an unfair comment. Just because someone wants to stop and think twice about the Chinese, does not make them an anti-war commie.

My personal believe is that the Chinese have serious problems. Their population is growing faster than their ability to create good jobs. Sooner or later, they will become fully capitalistic, since that is the only way for them to get the number of jobs they need. Once that happens, war is bad for business.

I'm not looking through rose-colored glasses, either. Their missile programs (Dongfeng 31 and Long March) are serious threats to this country. Their support of North Korea is dangerous--on the other hand, they also keep Kim Jong Il pretty much in-line. All they have to do is turn off the oil taps, and Pyong-Yang says "Yes, master, yes!" They have shown enormous patience with the Taiwan matter, though they rattle the sabers every so often.

Regardless, the point is that this is a nice site. Please, let us not resort to name-calling and hostility.

Dan,

The pointed contents of the post in question are that (we as a Nation) are evil occupiers (Iraq) and war mongerers, busy killing people, while the Chinese....bless their hearts...are not. Shades of Jane Fonda so far as I am concerned. Don"t worry about name calling..if the shoe fits, then they should wear it.

I lived through the Hippie era and all the other unAmerican movements extant at that time..that corrupt generation was just ahead of mine. And it disgusts me to think some citizens, then and now, could suggest that our Nation is an evil letter of innocent blood.

I have two IH mounted corn pickers that are going to the scrappers as soon as I can get the time. Also my dads old JD pulltype combine. These items are beyond repair, and I have mentioned on this site for over a year that anyone needing parts let me know, so I feel I have tried to share them with rebuilders.

I reload ammunition and shoot quite a bit. Bullets have really gotten high. I buy seconds direct from the manufacturer and they told me it was the price of raw copper and lead, as that was all going to China.

I dont know why we always have to have some tin horn dictator to worry about. Hitler, Tojo, Lenin, Stalin, Ho Chi Mihn, All the nut jobs in the middle east, and now whoever the nut job is in China!!

How do you get the seconds from which manufactare? I reload too and sure could use a break on bullets since E-Bay won't allow them anymore. What cal do you use?

I reload for 10 or 12 calibers from .223 to .35 remington. The manufacturer I am talking about is Sierra bullets. The ditched California about 20 years ago due to all their rules, ordinances, unions, etc. They located at sedalia, which is about 20 miles from me. They sell their seconds by the pound. About the only economical way to buy them is to walk in. I think shipping something that heavy would make it prohibitive.

Anymore their prices have gotten to where, when you cull out the ones that just are not shootable, its about the same as retail.

Glad I stocked up in 1994 or so. One good thing about slick willie, he scared me into stocking up. The stuff I bought then sure looks cheap compared to now.

teddy, I don't know what cal. ammo you are looking for, I have several websites to order bullets from. I have been reloading over 30 years now. Most of the stuff I reload is for shooting varmints 22-250,223. but I do reload 300 win mag., 338 win Mag, 30-06 Ackley Improved, 270 win. and 7mm mag.

You can get seconds from Nosler, I will see if I can find thier 800 number.

It"s going to China....just like the scrap went to Japan for several years prior to WW2.

Oh a bit of trivia.....did you know the Japanese army rode to war in Dodge trucks? yep...1937 models. They were marked Largo...Dodge"s export name. I knew a vet that told me he looked at an abandoned Jap truck and thought it looked familiar. He opened the door and on the door post it said; Largo built by Dodge Motor Corp 1937.
