Thanks for the info on the ser#'s. Ive always wanted one and when I heard about this one I went to see it and offered the guy 800 dollars. He farmed with it up to 2 years ago and it has the planter attachment with seed bin and fertilizer bin all in good shape. Also got several scooters, sweeps, half shovels and disc hillers with it. It will run but I want to fix several oil leaks. The motor was covered with about a half inch of gunk. Any info on the planter would be appreciated. Also, how the heck do you check the oil on this thing?!! We are going to repaint this summer. Again thanks for the info and will be calling on yall again. p.s. is the mason jar on the breather original or is that redneck engineering. SWM

Great tractor and attachments I have no info on the planter, but you have made a fine buy. As Andy indicates the cleaner is correct (optional IH). When the oil is filled to just run out the top petcock, it is as full as it needs to be. Run it until it just stops coming out the bottom cock, then refill. 10-40 oil from a major brand is my choice, the data in the manual on oil is as old as the manual and not the best lube option. Lookin' good Stan,
I see that it has part of an aftermarket 3-point hitch (upper link tie point) on the rear rockshaft, hope you got the other two (lower) major parts - works well with a 3-pt rotary mower.

Your planter looks like it's a McCormick A-178 (Runner) Planter "for use with Farmall Super-A Tractor".

I thought they all leaked a little oil & grease...

Great looking tractor. That is about what mine looked like before the restoration last year. Even your battery box sides are there, cant believe that cause they are always missing. If you dont have the lid you can get that from OEM Tractor Parts.

You have the pulley for the side pulley? They arent to hard to find if you dont.

Your planter is a 179 Blackland Planter. The fertilize unit it a 101. Together they sell for around $800.00 here if you can find one. I see you have the packing wheel with the planter too, mine is missing but we never used it anyway.

The cultivators are a 144 and go for around $800.00 if its complete. In three years tho I have never seen a set for sell. Looks like the lift link bar has had an extra rod added to it to beef it up some.

If you need the manuals on the 144 Cultivator unit and 101 fertilize unit or the 179 Blackland Planter you can get them at Binder books. The 101 Fertilize unit is covered in the 144 Cultivator manual.

You will need an Operators manual to show you where/how much oil to add and where to grease everything.

Country looks like East Texas. Where you at?

I have some pictures of my SA that my father bought new in 1949 that I restored. I think I have four posted in the Tractor photo section if you can find them.

Great looking tractor, sure brings back memories.

Hi Stan,

Your Super A looks great! They look like nice little tractors. To check the oil, look on the right-side of the engine oil pan, there should be 2 petcocks on there. Open the lower petcock and see if any oil comes out. The way to know if it is correct oil level is there should be oil coming from the lower petcock, but not the top one. (keep the level between the 2 petcocks). The air cleaner with the glass jar is called a "pre-cleaner". They were used on tractors that were operated in extremely dirty or dusty conditions. Donaldson, M&W and others made optional pre-cleaners. The jar catchs more dirt.

Good luck restoring it and have fun!

Andy Motteberg.
