I recently purchased a "53 W6. It ran great at first, pushed snow in the yard for about 3 hours in the dark. Next day, ran out of fuel. After i filled the tank it would run for about 10-15 minutes and would not run under load. Put additive in tank, completley cleaned carb and nothing. Before i tore into the carb, it would turn over fully choked but not run. Now, will only run a hair backed off of full choke. When i begin to take off the choke it revs up and wants to die. Also, my throttle doesn"t seem to work anymore. I don"t get it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I had a very similar problem with my w-6 about 2 years ago. I even went so far as to change the manifold! It wasnt the manifold, and I had the carb apart about a half dozen times too. It was crap in the tank... steam it out at a rad shop or empty and take it to a car wash and spend 20$ on it! The crud can settle onto the port and when you choke it, it causes the fuel to surge back and it frees it up temporarily, only to clog soon thereafter! Also check your floats for holes or for rubbing the side of the bowl. Other suggestions here are good too. I also had fuel coming out of the carb drain... it was not in enough qty to run it proper,it has gotta really gush out! That may be why it speeds up before it dies. Let me know if this fixes it. Good luck.

Just an idea---have you checked for a good hot blue spark at the coil-distributor wire? Could be an ignition problem that showed up at the same time as the fuel problem.

Well, it sure sounds like you are running lean for some reason. If you are positive everything you have checked thus far is okay, it is time to check your manifold for cracks and check your manifold gaskets for leaks - especially between the manifold and the head. Get it running and spray around manifold and head with WD-40 to see if sound of engine changes....

Do you have good fuel flow out of feed line with it unhooked from carb?

The problem before you worked on the carb was likely a fuel flow problem, perhaps because it ran dry and you stirred up crud when you put gas in the empty tank partially plugging the outlet. A temporary fix, permanent if you're lucky is to run a wire inside the tank into the outlet and dislodge whatever is in there -- may or may not plug again. Also remove the fuel line AND the fitting that screws into the carb, there is a screen inside the fitting. The throttle control problem is probably because the attachment between the carb and the governor (inside the tube between the gov and carb) was not made correctly -- the rod must fit into the notch, hard to see when you are reassembling.

I have good fuel flow at the strainer and the carb. This was one of the first things that I checked. I also put a new fuel line on (rubber hose instead of the copper tubing mess that was already there). Also, I checked the governor - carb connection during installation. The rod is right where it should be. Another thing that I found was in the bottom of the carb where excess fuel drains, the filter material was gone. I plugged the hole but nothing seemed to really change. The carburetor that is on this machine matches the description in the manual for the kerosene carb, but everything else looks to be the gasoline version.

You are SURE that the carb to gov connection is correct? That connection is not easy to make, and it is easy to get it out of line even if you think it is correct until it goes out of sight. Your symptoms match that. Usually, in that situation, they don't rev up when going off choke, they sputter and die. The type of carb doesn't make a lot of difference. Externally the kerosene/distillate has a drain cock, gasoline a plug. You could have the carb out of adjustment. Use an intial setting of 1 turn out for the idle and three turns out for the main jet.

The carb to gov connection is correct, i pulled it back just far enough to see when i pulled the throttle it turned. Also, i put the carb to those settings as per the manual. still nothing. i can turn on the adjustment screws almost all of the way out and in and they don't seem to make much difference.
