i rebuilt the engine on a 340 ih utility tractor, this took some time, i replaced cluth throw out bearing and clutch disc, once engine was done i had a buddy help to line up clutch and mate the engine to the clutch housing. a few weeks later i assembled the rest of the tractor and fired it up, i timed the engine , and runs fine. at this time i decided to take her out of the shop for a test ride, i sat on the seat, and pushed in the clutch and seems like its not working. there is no noises, clutch pedal is adjusted and i did not try putting it into gear cause seems like i would grind it getting into gear, maybe nothings wrong, but something seems not right to me. how can icheck for proper clutch function and is it possible something is sticking due to time it took to fix and assemble, my shop stays at about 44.Thanks Jim

340s have a light feel to the clutch.
From the picture I know it is on concrete.
With the engine off-----
Block down the clutch pedal (or clamp it down) and put it in high gear. Now roll the tractor forward and back. if there is little resistence, it is probably OK. Now have some one start letting out the clutch while pushing it forward and back (engine off)
If there is a point at which the tractor stops moving as the clutch is engaged, I think it is OK.
Aim it out of the garage by pushing it. remove the wire going to the coil from the key.
Put it in first with the clutch down and crank the engine. if it cranks you are good to go. Put it together and try it. Be sure to keep your hand on the key to stop it if it keeps moving. Good luck, JimN

Did you happen to get the disk in back wards?? If you did it will not release like it should. I learned that one about 4 years ago when I was working on a pick up and put one in back wards and it would not release.

Did you adjust the free-play on your linkage after putting it back together to allow for the new disc?

The thicker the disc, the further forward the linkage has to go to contact the fingers to disengage the clutch.

thanks everyone for all your help,i will try adjustments. i did not adjust clutch pedal rod after i put tractor back together, it is still adjusted the same as when i first removed. i didnt think about that new clutch disc would be thicker. my book says a 1" TO 1 1/8" FREE PLAY IN CLUTCH PEDAL im not sure how to measure this correctly. thanks, Jim

Depending which book you're talking about, it may have a picture.

Basically it is how far the top of teh brake pedal should travel from its top position before you start to feel resistance.
