Trying to put a dedicated power steering pump on a M.

First picture is the way it is supposed to fit. Note the position of the fan in relation to the PS drive pulley. It is ahead of it.

Next two pictures are my tractor. Why is that darned fan so far back?

Thanks,

Allan

Allen, Just got home from a double shift and read this.

Char-Lynn used a set of spacers and longer bolts to move the fan a little foward on this setup.

I have a set of the spacers and bolts in the shop.

If ya need or want, I can take some pics of them and get ya some measurments of everything there is to do the job.

I gotta go back in early, but will gladly get all the info ya might need when I get back home tomorrow around 5:30 or so.

my email is open.

Bruce

I am really sorry to hear about the engine deal allen, im 34 years old and i know the engine has not been changed out since i can remember, must have been before my time, I know he bought it new and i know it had always had a farmhand on it since it was near new, so as far as welded framerails, I guess thats entirely possible, he always built some monster stacks, but he also made sure things were fixed right if he broke something. I wish he was still around to ask him, Dad does not remember anything about it either. best of luck with the steering setup, If there is any problem with the frame deal I would be happy to make it right, let me know. Thanks, Dustin

Damp D service, I wouldn't worry about it. If the tractor is a 52 model it has the correct engine. Engine probably has the same last 3 digits on serial # that tractor serial # has. On the fan, charr lynn used spacers behind fan with 4 bolt holes that match ones holding fan on with that pulley set up. Also used longer bolts with sleeves on them to take the place of IH pump impeller drive studs. This moved fan far enough forward to clear if fan blades were not bent.

Oh, I shouldn't even have brought it up.

Listen, that tractor is at least 1,000 times more than I expected. Fact is, I'd take anything else you wanted to move. :>)

Don't you even think about it. I'm sure not. :>)

Those Farmhands busted 'em. A fact of life back then. Didn't start happening until around '53 or '54; something like that. That's when we learned how to gusset the darned things to keep it from happening.

But, those old Farmalls were dropping like flies all over the place and people just accepted it for what it was worth. An occurance.

I'll hear no more about it. You sold an absolute EXCELLENT tractor! And, I still think you are one of the most honest guys I've ever ran into. :>)

Allen,
I had the exact same issue when I put the M motor in my 400 so I could use it. It is just the spacers like everyone else said. I took the fan and spacer off my 400 motor and it line up fine. Not too difficult. You could look for 400 parts if that makes it easier to find. Lee

Hi Lee,

Is the spacer larger than this one that is already on the tractor? Could it be that the blades are just bent back some?

Thanks Guys,

Everyone in 5 counties is telling me to use spacers to get that fan moved out. Mine is setting at 2 7/8" from the radiator. Just this side of 3 full inches from the core.

Is it easier to just yank that silly radiator clear out of the way?

Sorry for the stupid questions, never done this one before.

Allan

I would not remove the radiator if you don"t have to. It has been my experience that the radiator is a pain to remove. There are two studs in the bottom of the radiator with nuts underneath. You have to lay on your back to get them loose, they are most likely rusted and furthermore there is not a lot of room for a hand and wrench. Then you have to drain all the coolant, disconnect the hoses and remove the steering shaft. You can reach in front of the fan, remove the water pump driver, and then unscrew the four bolts that hold the fan to the pump. Much eaiser in my opinion, heck! I have even removed the water pump on my M without haveing to remove the radiator :-)

Just put on you have to use spacers ,almost half an inch and you might have to bend the blades a little

It's been a few years since I installed one,but I believe Char Lynn supplied a spacer that was to be placed between the fan and water pump.

The engine is a Stationary Unit.

Think that could be the difference? Fan drive/waterpump?

I think Chuck is right, you need a spacer to set the fan further forward. There is a Charlynn powersteering setup on ebay. The listing mentions and shows the fan spacer.

Sir, I would check for space"s I just pulled apart a cub that someone put an aftermarket generator on and it had 2 spacer"s on rear of pully and the pully was on backwards. I had to file the key and reverse the pully and move the spacer"s to get the pully and belt to run straight.

It's gotta have something to do with the spacing at the water pump. Maybe the models with the pump had a spacer installed. Can you post a pic from the same view as the one with the pump was taken?

I don't know.

I bought the pump probably three years ago out of a salvage yard, so didn't see how it was installed on the parent tractor.

Also, I'm kinda sure that this tractor broke in two at one time or another, because the frame rails have been welded back together, the radiator is new and the complete engine has been replaced.

The serial number of the engine is: RKM 281064 and it really doesn't look "M-ish". What did that engine originally fit?

'Spose I ought to just get a priority valve and skip this headache?

Allen... If this engine is from a power unit the serial number will be UBKM..... You should also have a dipstick for the engine oil.

Allen ---

The second picture showes the top pully to be about 3/4" forward of the bottom pully.....if you look close you can see the space between the belt and the pully grove.....that may help...

Allan:
Is this the M you just recently bought from your friend? Maybe he might know where the engine came from and whether or not the tractor had been crashed. mike

I doubt it,

Dustin is a young troop and the tractor had belonged to his Grandpa. Plus, it has been parked away in a shed for over 20 years.

Found out that the engine is out of a Stationary Power setup. No big deal really.

I've been around Farmhands all my life and understand that they do "break 'em in half".

The waterpump/fan drive is obviously different.

Guess I'll just have to go with a priority valve setup IF the darned live pump will bolt up now.

If not, we're manual steering all the way I guess. :>)

Well, good luck to you on that. My SM has the live pump and the Behlen pump stacked between and it is a tight fit - right up to the oil filter housing. I have to use plug wires with 90 degree ends at the distributor. With a priority valve, you ought to have more room than me. Guess you are wondering if the live pump will match the dist flange pattern on yours??? mike

Doe's your fan have the spacer that shows in the top photo? Maybe aftermarket waterpump? On your tractor it looks like the belt is out of line, but that just may be the angle of the photo. ken

Kinda looks like you got one of those rare "set back fan" models especially designed to allow more clearance for the trash when the cornpicker is mounted.
