Rebuilding the engine in my 504. Do I need to run a certain type of oil during break in to make the rings seat? Bought some some rotella 15w-40 but a relative said he would use it to break the engine in. Please help.

I have always just run hd40 in everything I own, and I have lots of old equipment with high hours including an old truck with 768k on the original motor. I also have diesel engines out there that I have rebuilt for other folks with well over 20,000 hours on them and still going. I always broke them in with the oil that the customer intended on using in the motor. I NEVER use synthetic ANYTHING in any engine. The regular stuff has worked great for over 100 years. If it aint broke, don't fix it. Seemed to always work good for me. Just my two cents.

I have heard not to use synthetic oil during the first oil change. The rumor is that the rings may not seat properly becuase of the slicker synthetic oil.
Myth or fact ?

Forget the STP....STP is what they use to make oil thicker.....you are winding up with 40w oil...save your money.....

No,

That is one of those old habits left over from the model T days like lapping valves. Just simply isn't done anymore.

Just use the oil you are planning on using in the tractor.

There is one company that still specifies "special" break in oil for the first 100 hours on a new engine. John Deere. I think it is supposed to help the rings seat better who knows. I always use the oil that I'am going to be using in the tractor and change it after the first few hours to get out any left over grit or filings. From then on just normal change intervals and don't worry about it.

My 2 cents worth, I always preferred to use whatever oil I intended to run the engine with I always liked to change oil and filter after the first hour or so of running to get any hidden dirt out engine that was missed in cleaning.I have been told no additives or synthetics till it has several hundred hours on it. I'm not an expert but has always worked for me, hope this helps some

I use regular 30HD with some of that STP honey oil additive.

Thanks for all the info. I think I'll run the oil I bought(Rotella 15w-40)and change the oil and filter after the first hour.
