Low speed 1st gear for M, looking for info

I've pretty much decided to make the extra M I have into a chore tractor and put the loader on it. I'm thinking about putting the low 1st gear setup in it.

Does anyone know where I can find the info on what the speed actually is with low 1st? I'm wondering how it compares to regular 1st. Also is it hard to find that setup? Is it just a dumb idea?

Certain W-6 serial numbered tractors will match up with M"s and puting the W-6 gears and counter shafts will slow an M down about .5 mph at full rpm. Did that to my stock puller M and have no problem with mph at stock pulls.

That's a good tip and something I did not know.
Thanks.

i would say it depends on your needs. often i've found i've needed slower speeds than available in the field and faster than available in the yard, or the other way around--even with an 8 fwd 2 reverse speeds tranny (ford). A good M will have enough power at lower engine rpm (and resulting lower ground speeds) to do quite a bit of hard yard work before you need to open 'er up.

Farmall M 1760 rpms, 14.9-38 tire, standard 1st= 3.41 mph, low-low first= 2.26 mph.

1. low-low gears are hard to find
2. You will need to change out the counter shaft, reverse idler, and 1st gear slider, that should be it.

Thanks.

I was trying to find this data, the actual mph speeds but hadn't. Where did you find it?

I calculate it with the gear ratio's and tire rolling circumference.

I dont know if you want the low gear in there, its really low... compared to regular 1st. We have one in a Super H and when that thing is screming at 2000 rpms it hardly moves... Great for pulling but when using the tractor in the feild we never use it.

I could see how it would be impractical for a field tractor. I think it could be useful for me in some situations on a chore tractor.

There is a low speed 1st setup for the M. I don't know what speed it gives you. It is a pretty major job to install it and the parts are not easy to come by. I think orchard tractors O-6 had this as standard equipment and parts may fit the M. You have to change out the counter shaft and the reverse gears as well as the second gear on the countershaft, maybe others. The first gear on the countershaft is too small to make a gear to slide onto the shaft, so the gear is machined into the shaft. That is why you must change the countershaft. The reverse idler runs off 1st gear, so you have to change that. In the standard set up, the 1st and 2nd gear on the counter shaft is made together as a double gear, so since the 1st gear is on the countershaft with the new setup, you have to put in a single gear for 2nd. Bottom line is you have to take nearly everything out of the transmission to do it if you can even find the parts.

I know it requires dismantling the transmission.
Have you done one of these conversions before?

No have not done it. I just looked in my parts info to find the conversion set up.
