What was original as far as paint on the axle shafts on the H/SH?? As far as I can see from older photos it looks like they were unpainted.

If you look at this image in full qaulity, It appears that these axles were unpainted. I like the looks of painted. If you dont move your wheels alot, a protective coating will last along time. If you move your wheels alot it will wear quickly. This pic was beleived to be taken International Harvester"s experimental farm at Hinsdale, Illinois. I got it from the Wisconsin Historical Society. They have great old reference photos.

We had this problem with out H and my Dads Super H. and like the other guys said they werent painted, if you look in vintage photos you see no paint on them. Well we wanted to protect them some how and just not let them rust up. (i was unaware that there is a spray on paint that does this). And we didnt want to paint them in a heavy paint cause we do slide the hubs for plowing and some times transporting. So we used stove black paint. I know not correct how ever they do look good IMO anyway. and since the stove paint is soo thin they slide on the axel very welll, heck i slid them me alone with there sets of weights on them with not to much effort.

Gauger, You would not want paint on them, it would make the wheel harder to move. Good luck, Chuck

In order to make them look unpainted, but still "painted" so they won't corrode use the Cast Blast paint. Looks like unpainted steel. Available from high end Vette and others restoration sites.

They were unpainted. The painters put a tube over them when they painted the wheels.
