Super A steering repair question

I have disassembled the front end, pulled the axle extensions apart, removed wheels, and the steering knuckles. One wheel is cracked/broken and I will have to find a replacement (I'm looking for PN: 6787DEX). I am having difficulty in pulling the steering gear arm off the shaft so I can separate the steering box. I can�t seem to find a puller with jaws that will fit under the arm to pull it. What have you used?

No luck with removing the arm this morning. I'm afraid of damaging the lower half of the box with much more pounding on the pickle fork. I tried another puller, but can't get the jaws under the arm to pull it. I tried a pneumatic hammer with a taper fork attachment and it didn�t shake it loose, I�m not sure of my next course of action.

Greg: The shaft is tapered, use a forked bar, it will pop right off.

Thanks Hugh! I'll run down to the barn and pop that puppy off right now. I read about a Sparex parts kit for the gear box in the archives this morning, are these still available or should I just order OEM parts from a Case/IH Dealer?

Greg: Don't know, I've never bought anything but woodruff keys for the vertical shaft. I understand some of the early SA and A have a square tapered ahaft where the steering control arm fits on and those can usually be built up with shim stock. My tractors all have the round shaft with a Woodruff keys both for the control arm and the half gear. My vertical shaft is tapered and round where the steering control arm fits on. Over the years I've had to rebuild using oversized Woodruff keys and grind them until I got a tight fit. I've never had to but anything but gaskets and Woodruff keys

I've been fortunate that the bearings on the steering shaft have always been good.
