Thanks again to Hugh, Glenn, Nalens and all else who helped me with this problem.

Got my manifold gaskets today (I sat on the front door waiting for the Fed Ex man), and went out to work. Got the broken gasket replaced so she wasn't shoving exhaust into the adjacent intake port. Cleaned and gapped the plugs, and last week got the valves all adjusted to specs.

She fired right up and sounds better than when I got her! I went through the fuel system, replaced the points, condensor and coil, all before I got a look at the push rods under the valve cover. What I didn't post earlier was that I am used to car engines. One manifold for intake, and one for exhaust. So after replacing all the above, and straightening the push rods, I couldn't figure out why she was running even worse. Sitting there and staring at it for 30 minutes, it started to dawn on me that the carb was attached to the manifold. Hmmm. Finally realizing that the right side of the engine had no manifold, I discovered the intake portion of the single manifold. I had put the manifold back on (still not mentally connecting the carb being attached as important) with the broken gasket thinking what the hey, so it will be a little loud and smelly, but should run now that the rods were straight.

Well, suffice to say that replacing that gasket was the final piece to the puzzle and she is running like a top. So, should someone post here in the future about losing power on their 4 banger gas engine, I'll tell them to check fuel and spark first, but if that don't do it, you can bet I'm going to jump right to telling them to pull the valve cover next. Thanks again to all for your patience and guidance.

Dave

The coil will get HOT or not....it depends on whether the motor stopped with the points open or closed, thus sending 12v to the coil...or not. If left energized when not running, it can actually explode--spraying hot oil all over the place, like on the car parked to the right of the tractor. I have to force myself to remember to turn the key off when working on a non-starting engine so that does not happen to me again (was wife's car).

I'll take that into consideration, since I don't want hot oil all over myself either. I only turn the key on to check for power in a circuit, then it goes right back off. But we can all make mistakes right? Good advice.

One of my 140's has ser # 3732XXJ, which sounds very close to yours. Same wiring set up except I replaced the gen/volt reg with a alternator. If you turn the key one click to the right, the coil will get HOT.

One trick I've learned is to stop the tractors by turning off the fuel at the tank separator and letting it stop from lack of fuel. Mine now start right up even after sitting for 6 or 7 weeks.

Thanks Nawlens, good idea if I'm going to let it sit for a week or more. Especially in light of what we were all talking about concerning fuel fouling when I started having the problems. Let that fuel burn out of the carb and lines if she's going to sit. Yeah.

Dont feel bad. Every time I hear a tractor miss I'm reminded of a tractor I lost better than half a day on only to find I had missed a piece of gasket when scraping the old ones off. That lesson is inprinted on my mind. When hearing the story, my Dad looks me right in the eye and says "Haste makes waste".

No, not yet Hugh. I haven't had a chance to work her yet, but the blade is staying up over several days, and appeared to work fine the little bit I tried it. I took the advice and set the limit screws to prevent over working it. Can play with it a little more tomorrow night and see where we are.

I have to find a wiring diagram for the 67/68 140, the instrument box has been open for years, and the wiring to the light switch isn't right. My book doesn't show my setup (wrong year or something), which has an ammeter, a fuse, a key, a seperate starter button, AND the light switch.

Question, with just the key on (not running), should the coil get hot (not warm, hot)????

Dave: Glad to hear you have the engine working well. Did you resolve what might be wrong with the hydraulics? that can be quite simple if it's in the lever adjustment.
