Allan: I may have missed some posts which already answer this, but were you successful in getting the P/S system on your M, and does it work well?

allan, question about the eaton pump in reply to Red Mist, 02-22-2008 15:43:41
will that eaton pump mount up higher and run off the genny belt like the charr-lynn pumps did? that would be a slick pump with the remote resevoir. i'm in the process of putting my super m back together, would like to put ps on it. dont know if i'll will put live hyd on this one, its a stage 1, but power steering would be nice. what years of old fords did those eaton pumps come on??

Should,

This is a Charlynn setup too. Only difference is the different type bracket.

Don't know 'bout the Fords.

How big of a job is it to put the PS pulley on the crankshaft pulley? Do you have to take the front bolster off to get at the pulley?

The crank pin is held on and centered by a setscrew.

Take it out, push the crank pin out of the crank, set the pulley on the main pulley (it self-centers), put the pin back in the crank and then replace the setscrew. That's the easy part.

Rough part is that the fan has to be spaced out forward an inch and the shroud has to be trimmed back to allow room for the belt and pulley.

Kind of a bummer. :>(

Yes Sir,

That part is done and over. Now, it feels just like my 686 and Hydro 70's steering. Very pleased with it.

Working on the live hydraulics now. Had to order one of those auxiliary tanks for the belly sump, which just came in tonight. Hope to have that part all up and running tomorrow.

Sure like this old tractor! :>)

Are you saying someone makes a reservoir tank to replace the belly pump? I was thinking of fabricating a tank to go under there on my H for the live pump.
You’ve also inspired me to add power steering to it as long as I’m going. I just picked up a Char-Lynn torque motor. I am thinking of running it off the live hydraulic pump. Guess I need a priority valve to do that. Any experience along those lines?

IH dealers used to sell "extension tanks" to give the belly pump extra capacity.

A round tank that screws onto the fill pipe, which gives the existing belly sump another gallon or two of oil.

Yeah, if you're going to use the live pump, you'll need to use a priority valve in the mix. Plumb the output of the pump to the "in" of the valve and then use it's "EX" (exhaust) port to feed the rest of the system.

If it is the adjustable kind, set it at 3 1/2 gallon.

Where can I get one of these pumps? My Charlyn pump died on my SMTA. I would really like to get one of these. Thanks in advance for the info.

It's an Eaton.

Word on the street is that lots of old Ford cars, pickups and trucks used this pump.

It's sure got a lot of snort is all I know. Handles those big tires, sitting dead still with just a little finger.

Allan,
Thanks, that's what I thought it was. I have a 62 Galaxie and it looked just like that. Nice job of putting it on.

That is great. Looks like you did a neat job. That thing fought you a good bit of the way, too. A good lesson for all of us: "Don't give up the good fight."
