Farmall H engine turning a Dedicated Generator

I am thinking of hooking one of my spare Farmall H engines up to a generator head for a safe, secure power source. Maybe even build a frame for it like a power unit but for a generator.

Any ideas or experience out there?

I have three working engines with bad trannys or whatever. I want to put them to work. Could I get 50 amp, 220 out of it with the right head?

Any ideas or answers!

Thanks!

While we are on the subject of generators...I am needing a 60KVA 3 phase generator powered by gas or diesel power pack...any suggestions without taking out a big bank loan?

Nice idea! If you do make a generator with the H motor, post some pics.

Andy.

Like Nawlens suggests you'll need close to 25 HP into the generator to get the ~11 KW of electric back out of it. And the H engine is rated at 24 HP if I recall - so it should work except possibly when the genny is loaded to ITS maximum output.

A few considerations:

1 - If you're gonna direct drive the genny it'll need to be a 4 pole gen head and the engine will have to run at 1,800 RPM to get 60 hz. Be certain your engine can deliver full power at 1,800 RPM!

2 - Alternatively you can use a cheaper 2 pole genny and run it at 3,600 RPM for 60 hz - but you'll need to belt drive it from the H engine to get 3,600 RPM.

3 - Unless you are not fussy about generator frequency the RPM droop (difference in RPM no load to full load) on the stock H engine governor may be troublesome.

Good luck - it sounds like a fun and worthwhile project!

Bob, that 24 hp rating is for a distilate H which he may have. The gas versions are 27 and change close to 28 on the belt.

50 amps at 220 volts is about 11 KW. That would take about 15 HP before losses. I'm guessing 20 to 25 HP rated engine output would be needed.
