Working my way back, bolt by bolt on an H. I'm at the starter. Is there supposed to be a gasket between the starter and the housing? I see there is not a lot of oil that shoud be up there, but will it blowby? Maybe just the permatex red sealer?

I have a Farmall A and My starter just bolts directly to the housing. No gasket there should be a little oil pep cock on top there and just add a little oil in there during high moist times during the year.

NO!! You need a very clean metal to metal contact for the electricity to make a full circuit.IF there is ANY oil in that cavity, you have big problems.

No, not running yet. Want to finish the pedestal, lights, switchbox before I install the refurbished fuel tank. Don't want to take a chance of scratching that! I spent more than a few hours prepping it. Etch primer, glass filler, surfacer, block sanding four times, glaze on pin holes, and final primer and wet sand 320. Paint that, fenders, hood, grill next week. Going to friends' body shop and use the booth at night. Pic of a city boy friend trying to mow my alfalfa on the SH StageII

If there is anything put between the starter and the housing, you will be asking for starter problems, both from the starter moving from torque and jambing the flywheel and from ground problems. Clean shiny metal only, not even paint!

There should be no oil there.

Do not use any type of gasket or sealant. You need to have good metal to metal contact or the starter will not work properly. The contact between the starter and the clutch housing has to carry the same amount of amps while cranking as the starter cables.

If you attach the ground cable from the battery to one of the starter mounting bolts it will eliminate some of the ground path while cranking but you then still need a good connection for the rest of the electrical system to work properly.

Not sure if it it supposed to have a gasket, but none of our Farmalls have gaskets on the starter.
