when im driving the 340, sometimes i need to pull choke out about 1/4 for tractor to run smooth, i did not rebuild this carb and im thinking i should. is it a tough job for someone who never has taken a carb apart to install a carb kit, or should i take it to a mechanic who has worked on carbs . im trying to learn as i go but hate to mess things up also. Thanks, jim

if there is any good mechanical books for sale on the subject of carb rebuilding would help

It is not hard to do. Just remember not to push on the needle inside its seat if you are adjusting the float. Hold the hinge area of float with needle nose pliers and evenly bend each float assuming the float is out of adjustment.

Also invest in a gal. of carb cleaner in a gal. container with a dipper and soak the bowl and other parts for a few hours to overnight or longer and then be sure to blow out all holes and passages with compressed air. There are passages in the carb body you don't know about until air starts blowing through them.

Tooltime,

I suspect that your 340 U has the same carb as mine does. It is a Marvel Schebler carb, and uses the same gasket and rebuild kit as the 8N Ford and the Allis WD. The full carbs are not interchangable due to differences in the throttle shaft linkage and a few minor external differences.

There is an excellent multipage set of rebuild instructions available on the YT 9N,2N,8N site that has really good pictures. I made a copy some time ago and stuffed it into my I&T repair manual.

The kit is available from NAPA or O'Reilly's. CIH just wants to sell the individual gaskets, needle and seat, etc and it adds up quickly beyond the cost of a kit.

The actual rebuilding of a carb is pretty straightforward. Assuming you purchase the correct kit, it's just replacement of parts. The tricky parts are: examining, and correcting, the housing for possible air leaks, and if necessairy adjusting the float height.

And excellent reference for this, applicable for all carbs, is found over at the Farmall Cub website:

There are adjustments for high speed load condition running. The screws are sticking out of the carb. The load adjusting screw should be turned outward 1/4 turn at a time till it runs and responds to throttle well without the choke. The manual should indicate which screw. Most old sixties engine/tuneup/auto repair manuals will have good sections on carbs. Library, and a copy machine!!! JimN
