I was having this discussion at work about Positive ground vs. negative ground...
Wich is best anyway?

Any ideas?

bc- you would be concerned about a battery exploding if it ever happened to you. I felt the way you did until one exploded on me. Now I do things a little more carefully.

I remember from reading a book on the old cars [1909] that they were positive ground because of the flow of electrons from a battery would be better. Wish I could remember what book it was---I'd like to re-read it.

This subject will have answers depending on lots of backgrounds. My experience in basic electric school taught by RCA and GE was pos grnd is natural due to this plannet and north pole and south pole. If your system is designed for pos gnd then go that way. Older stuff for yrs on 6v was pos gnd. Take your pic with what you have. Your 6v C was probably pos gnd when new so stay that way or did yours have a GERMAN charging system as im just not familiar with the FRENCH Cs or is yours GERMAN. You forgot to tell the readers where you live and the origin of your tractor.

No particular best way, but most common practice is negative ground for 12 volt and positive ground for 6 volt.

I don't really think any is "better", a lot of Farmalls still have positive ground and work fine. Any way will work as long as it is wired correctly.

All your cars and everything nowadays are negative ground. I don't know if there is a difference for running purposes but if you ever want to jump start something or somebody jump starts you not knowing it is positive ground and they put the wrong cable on the ground, they will be in for a sizzle which also might zap someones alternator. I've never worried about a battery exploding but I guess it does happen which is why they recommend putting your ground cable on the engine somewhere which also then creates confusion on the different grounds. I just hook directly to the all battery posts so I'm sure they match up except that one dark night when I got zapped.

A good way to prevent injury from battery explosion is to wrap your wife's sweater around the top of the battery when boosting.
