460 is a knocking...

...and I wasn"t a rocking. Last evening I was snowblowing the latest storm to hit the Northeast. I had made a couple of passes on the driveway when the tractor started knocking. I had checked the oil prior to starting the tractor and it was ok and the oil pressure was fine (about 42 lbs). Listening to the knock it appears to be coming from near the rear of the engine or transmission area. I am leaning towards the front bearing on the PTO shaft. The reason being is the knock seems to be about the same RPM as the PTO shaft. Also it seems to dissipate some when I load up the blower with snow. It makes the noise when the PTO is engaged or stopped. I haven"t taken the time to count and time the knock to determine the RPM. I thought of this after I came in for the evening all discouraged. I have a couple of questions and would like all of your opinions on the knocking. I want to eliminate possible sources. Someone at work has suggested the hydro pump as a source. I thought that ran at a higher RPM than the engine or PTO, but can I hurt anything if I remove the hydro pump and start the tractor? Also, I assume if it is the bearings on the PTO shaft that I will need to split the tractor to replace them? Sorry for the long post. Appreciate your input. I"ll try the plastic tube/stethescope check Saturday to try and pin point the area of the noise.

pull the pan off the engine and look for the filings, you most likely spun a rod bearing, it happens, if you had shut it off right away you might have saved the crank, not sure until you look,

It will be easier to remove the cover under the PTO driven gear. It is on the bottom of the clutch housing, second cover back from the engine. The first should be a steel plate for access to the clutch. The next one, the one you want , will be cast iron. You will get about five gallons of oil out of it there. Once you have it off you will be able to see the gear. You probably have either a broken tooth or have a piece of metal lodged in a tooth.

Thanks Owen,

I'll try and get that cover off ASAP and check the driven gear. Looking at the CNH parts diagram I'll need to do this to ID the gear anyway. They list two different gears with different #'s of teeth. Also, is that gear in the TA casing or the transmission casing? I assume it requires a split of the tractor to remove the gear and repplace it.

Well, the knock seems to be associated with something that is at a lower RPM than the engine. I timed it this morning and counted 42 knocks over 15 seconds at an engine RPM of 650. This would put the knock in the PTO range. Does anyone know if I can remove the hydro pump and run the engine to see if the pump is the source of the noise? If it is the PTO it sounds like it is in the front of the transmission so I"m guessing the front bearing for the PTO shaft. Any thoughts?

Oh ya, it is snowing again in Maine. They are calling for another 10-14" with more on the way for Monday, too.
