Farmall H Carb problem - Fuel Adjustment Screw

I"m rebuilding a 1943 H. It seems to run OK now, with one problem.

The carb leaks at the fuel adjusting screw. The packing that came with the carb kit crumbled in my fingers. Also, the parts manual shows a "seat", but all I found was packing and the screw in the carb I dismantled

1. Can I get just the packing material or is there a substitute?
2. Did all H"s have a seat under the needlepoint of the screw?
Thanks

My experience was the same as yours; new kit and the packing crumbled in my fingers. Gordo is right about the part number for the new packing and how to install it without breaking it. The seat is probably still in the carb. Just leave it there.
Substitute for packing: I used 4 neoprene o-rings stacked on the needle until I could get a new packing from the dealer. They were snug fit on the needle. Worked fine.

I don't know what kit you used, but TSC sells a "complete" kit for about 35 dollars. It includes the packing and a new needle, and everything else. Your IH dealer has just the packing for about 5 dollars. It's p/n 24703DA. When you drop it in the orfice it will be just barely below the threads. Be careful to install needle and seat together to compress it, until there is medium pressure on the needle. Then run the needle all the way in, EASY, and then back out 3 1/2 turns for basic setting.

I'm not one that should give advice - but I just dealt with the same issue this afternoon using advice below from this forum. Good results so far. JimN posted this a few days ago:
Simple and effective packing (if the needle is smooth) is Teflon tape twisted into a rope and wound around the shaft. Approximately the same amount of material is needed to make sure the packing is not too small allowing the packing nut to screw in all the way to thread bind. If too much is put in, the packing nut will not find threads to start on the needle base. Do not over tighten when assembling, the Teflon can be squeezed out the packing nut gap. This method takes less tension than the stock packing rope. Thin packing rope/twine is available at good plumbing supply houses as well. JimN
