I was admiring my neighbor's M today when I noticed that it had the steel knob on the gear-shift.

What does that signify, exactly? The archives don't seem to show anything. I'm thinking maybe it is a wartime model?

The shifter had four numbers on it, but I didn't have a chance to jot them down.

The cast iron knobs seem somewhat random... I have two '42 H's that both have the rubber handle, and then I have two '45 (or '46) W-9's and one of them has the rubber handle and one has the cast iron.

I guess the '42 H's are too early and the W-9's must have come at the end of the rationing/shortage.

After 60+ years any year tractor may have parts from any other year model was made. I have early 1940 M that has cast iron knob, am sure it is not original

Steel shifter knob signifies it was made during world war 2. Due to rubber rationing, steel had to be used. My brother has a 1943 M, it has steel shifter knob too. Not all Hs and Ms made during the war had steel shifter knobs though, I have an H that was made in March of 1942, it has a rubber knob. I believe that the factory switched to steel later in 1942 or 1943 once war production was in full swing and rubber rationing started.
