I have a dire situation with my 460 where the fast hitch attaches under the belly of the tractor, ahead of the rear axel. There are three bolts that attach a plate to the tractor (that plate connects to the front end of the wishbone). Now all three of the bolts were pulled out of their holes. Upon further inspection, each bolt hole appear at some point to have been drilled, retapped and a spacer inserted (looks like a coiled spring) and the bolts were reinstalled. To make things worse, the mounting area (which protrudes from the curved bottom of the tractor to give the plate a flat plane to attach to)on the tractor itself where the bolt holes are located, some of the casting around the holes have broken off so the holes are not complete until the last 1/4" or so of their overall depth. So not alot of surface area to reattach and tighten. I need suggestions on how to repair. Since there is not enought metal to surround the bolts, I can"t expect to try to put it back together and hold. Where the missing pieces are, the metal looks cast. Is it possible to weld the plate back to the bottom of the tracor?

Sometime in this tracors past, someone overstressed the hitch and did a good cover up. I"ve owned it for about a year (my 1st tractor by the way) and I would have never thought to have inspected that are for problems. Now I"ll know to look in the future.

So, how can I fix it short of buying a salvage rear half of a 460?

Thanks,
Kenneth

Torque specs on those 3 3/4-10 x 1 1/2 bolts holding the ball pivot bracket to the rearend housing of a 460 are 390 - 440 ft-lb.

You can purchase thread inserts (different than helicoils) from such places as McMaster Carr (mcmaster.com). They have the proper ID thread and a larger OD thread. You drill & tap the hole to the proper thread, apply some extra loctite to them and screw them into the hole and let them set up. For a 3/4-10 bolt you'd require a 90248A051 which uses a 1-8 external thread and has a length of 25/32. Package of 5 is about $13 + shipping.

On a shallow hole you are going to want to finish up with a bottoming tap so that you have full thread to the bottom of the hole unlike a plug tap that allows the last few threads to taper out, which makes starting the tap easier.

material around the current holes is going to be the big question, on whether or not there is enough to drill and tap for oversized holes.

I have an original 460 / 560 FH installation user's manual and if I recall correctly there is quiet a bit of torque on those bolts, more than the average 1/2" drive torque wrench is going to be capable of.

Teddy---are those metric studs or actually over-size SAE from Deere?

They are standard threads not metric, but one end was oversized so it would go in tight and stay when the nut was removed. It has been many years since I used them so I don't know if JD still has them.

Just thinking out loud here---if you were to drill on through the casting to put bolts through from the inside---what is up in the trans in this area & how close to the trans case does it run? I know that there isn't room under the bull gears for a screwdriver. The neighbor found that out after a mechanic left one in the trans case after working on it. Believe that was a 560. Anyway, put sealer on the bolts/lead washers/whatever. Just a thought.

Will that throw his draft control out of whack, or is there enough give in there to accommodate the extra 1/2 inch?

Get the Helicoil material completely out of the casting. Drill, tap, and bottom tap for threads that will be full depth just bigger than the Helicoil tap used for the poor repair you found. Use grade 8 bolts that have been cut off to just more than the depth of the new tapped holes, then drilled and tapped internally for the 3/4" original size, through their centers (thus making a bushing with big threads on the outside and original threads on the inside)
Use Locktite stud and bearing mount juice to seat them into the holes (tighten with a stub bolt in the 3/4" threads) and let them set up over night. Then grind off the excess sticking out, to make nice. Use grade 8 cap screws to remount the plate, with thread lock locktight on those, no lock washers, just heavy thickness flat washers.
My best least expense repair. JimN

After you get done what Jim suggested, have someone (or do it yourself) fabricate brackets to fit the bolt holes up along side of the one you are working on. I repaired more than one of those. On some I tapped the casting out to 7/8. If the 3/4 holes aren't too bad I got studs from John Deere that had a larger than standard thread on one end and fitted them as deep as they would go. then use nuts to fasten the bracket on. Then fabricate the irons , weld them to the bottom bracket and bolt them to the sides. The ones I repaired never came loose again.

Probably need a bunch of machinable nickel rod also. Another thought---thread a nut on the stud after welding the stud in the trans case & weld around the nut on the trans case to "spread" the stress. However, this will lower the plate by the thickness of the nuts. Also, instead of having just a "shear factor" on the studs it will introduce more"pull-out" potential. Latest thoughts.

Don't know if there is room---but one option is to remove the heli-coils & put studs up in the holes & weld them tight in the rear end casting. If I remember correctly, those bolts are 3/4 inch. Maybe the heli-coils are tight enough to thread in 3/4 inch studs & weld them tight---however, most heli-coils have built-in "spring" & might not be able to be welded tight. Option13 is to try & put in 7/8 studs & weld tight, but don't know if there is room to ream the holes on the plate & get 7/8 nuts on the studs.

One possibility might be to drill and tap new holes between the existing holes if the casing is not broken out too much (making sure not to drill all the way through). Then you could bolt a plate to the tractor with those countersunk type bolts. This plate could be predrilled and taped for the fasthitch bracket so you could then bolt it to the plate. The plate would have to be at least 1/2 inch thick. Roger

I can't specifically answer your question, but a good welder (I'm not) can probably fill the holes and retap? I believe your spacers are helicoils. What happened to yours is that the piece got loose and broke the casting. It is doubtful that it broke simply from stress if tight. My 460 almost had that problem as that hitch was loose when I bought it and the hitch itself was cracked. I had it welded. However, if the helicoils in yours are in the plate (hitch) as opposed to the belly, my hitch was not threaded. Although I vaguely remember seeing remnants of threads in the holes -- I'm not eager to take it off and look. I suppose if both the hitch was threaded in addition to the casting, it would be more stable. There was (still is) a missing piece of casting behind the axle housing where the fast hitch attaches, but there are ample threads there to allow it to be tightened. That area is one that no one looks at until it is too late. Yours and mine had obvious abuse due to lack of maintenance.
