As part of my H restoration I rebuilt the water pump this weekend. Completely disassembled it, sandblasted all the parts, primed it and installed new bearings & seals. Can someone explain the reasoning behind the whole spring drive coupling thingy? It just seems unnecessarily complicated to me so I must be overlooking something. I’m sure they didn’t design it that way just to puzzle me!

Tim, I am in the process of tearing my pump down and am stuck on getting the bearings out. Does the threaded hub unscrew off the shaft that the bearings are in? Did you get your parts from CaseIH?

The design is such that the pump impeller shaft has only a torque load on it, no radial load. There is a separate mounting for the bearings that take the radial load, allowing them to be greased without any chance of water getting into the bearings. The grease seals are not exposed to the coolant. Modern water pumps usually have sealed bearings mounted on the pump impeller shaft. After a while the seals fail and then the bearings get water in there and also fail. How many automotive water pumps do you know that lasted 60 years like the one on your H???

Haas:

Thanks for the explanation. I've often wondered myself why it took such a complicated piece of equipment to do such a simple job. The answer, evidently, is that it did the simple job longer.

That contraption keeps the impeller rear face seal surface pulled up against the seal allowing the bearings to be more rugged, and the system to be independent of temperature. Hope this does it. JimN
