I'm a Ford guy, but have been recruited to work on my brother-in-law's Int.404. I've done some work on it before, all instinctive guess work. Now the problem. The tractor originally had a tricycle front end, but was converted to WFE by previous owner. This thing has always looked funny to me in that the castor angle is negative. The spindles lean to the front. The weld that attaches the axle to the pivot pin housing has separated, but before I weld it back I need to know if the negative castor is correct. If it's not, this would be the time to get it right.

Also, I would like to know the year model of the tractor. Serial number taken from metal plate on left side is 2633J. Any help would be appreciated.

The tractor is 35 miles down in the country. I will go there this weekend and take some pics.

Thanks HughB and Jrry for the replies, and much needed info. What surprises. First we thought the machine was a mid fifties model. Nice to know it's 10 years newer. Next surprise is the picture which showing the front end with the tie rods behind the axle. Ours has em in front where they run into saplings when bush hogging, and get bent. Do you think somebody put the spindle assys on the worng ends of the center tube? Also, the wishbone appears to be welded to the top of the axle. Ours goes through holes in the axle and is held in place by a stop flange on the back and a nut on the front. The holes are what determines the castor angle and that has kept me from thinking about turning the whole assembly around. I wonder if this thing could have come from an industrial tractor. Sure doesn't look like the picture, and it is painted yellow. Sorry if I seem to be rambling. Just thinking out loud I guess. Strange setup for sure.

Regards the picture shown on the website. The front axle assembly is identical to that picture on my tractor. I have a 2404 which is the industrial model of the 404. The tie rod is behind the axle. If it is painted yellow it is from an industrial tractor. From your description it sounds like you have a front axle assembly from some other model of tractor.

According to a handy little gadget i have called a " pitch angle calculator" they have a negative angle of 5' degrees. I think you have a 1965 model there.
