Is there anything else holding the shaft in the bolster besides the nut on top?

I tried to tap the shaft down through the steering gear and nothing moves, yet the whole shaft moves up & down inside the bolster.

Do I need that big hammer again?

Randy

"I think" that when you get this H finished that you should publish a book and put all those pictures in it. I think it would be a money maker. tw

Prior to dismanteling it check and see if the worm gear mates to the center of the bolster gear.Normally you will find the worm is a little above center. If the thrust bearing looks OK you can put a correct size and thickness machine washer on top of the thrust bearing , that will center the gears again, I have found that 400's and 450's are the worst for this. I have also found recentering the gears will take a lot of the wobble out of the front wheels.

I had the same problem with my H. It turned out to be a slight bend in that shaft so I replaced it with one from the salvage yard. By the looks of things at the salvage yard the H's had a problem with that shaft as most of them had been removed. It took me some time to get the old one apart and a very large hammer but the replacement shaft went in easily.

Boy ain't that the truth, about everything I have taken apart has been "farmerized" to some extent. I am hoping to get that shaft out tonight so I can take a load of wheels, rims & the bolster to the sand blasters tomorrow.

Maybe this weekend I might get the engine back in, still need to have the neighbor look at the clutch to see if it's ok before I do that.

Once I start putting stuff back together I can start seeing farmall red in my future :D

randy, the top gear is tapered when it drops on the bolster steering shaft. best way i found to remove the shaft, if you have a 2 or 3 jaw puller set it up on the top of the bolster. the jaws are gonna be too big to grab the outside of the gear, but you can catch the the feet on the outside of the bolster. snug the puller up so you put a little tension on the center, i back the nut out but dont remove it yet. take a hammer and hit the gear puller bolt, it should knock the shaft loose out of the gear. once loose, remove nut rest of way. carefull that shaft is heavy. you dont need much tension on the gear puller, just get er good and snug.

I just caught up on all your pics. What a job, and there seems to be something worn and in need of work at every turn!
Great job documenting the whole process. I really appreciate that, and am enjoying watching it.

After searching yesterday and not finding anything, I tried today and found this post from last year which I think answers my question.
