I have an old IH backhoe from about 1960s. There is a lot of loose motion at the bottom of the swing trunion and am loosing lots of oil. I have determined that the bushing at the bottom of the trunion swing pinion gear is worn out causing the O ring to leak. Of course the loose motion at the bottom where the big nut goes is probably the cause.

Anybody know how to get that swing pinion shaft out of the main swing pedestal housing? It appears that the gear is too large to come out the bottom and there is a large steel bushing at the top that appears to be pressed into the housing????? ?????

Anybod have a parts breakdown?

This thing is so old I don't imagine the IH dealer will have any books on it anymore.

Any information will be appreciated.

Zane

The swing mechanism you"re referring to is a special internal cylinder design of IH backhoes 3120, 3130, 3140. There"s a Blue Ribbon service manual currently on eBay that describes what you"re talking about.

I know a guy who's got the parts book for that backhoe. If you're interested email me and I'll ask him if he wants to sell it.

Thanks Paul, I placed a bid on the manual. At least it may tell me how to get that gear out of the housing so I can get something made for it.

I have a grandson who is a pretty good machinist and hope he can make me a new bushing or what ever it needs. I put a new O ring in the bottom but with all the loose motion in the bushing it didn't even slow the oil down. It's like me, too old!

Thanks again, Zane

I recently bought another copy of that same manual on eBay while I was looking at an IH 3414 industrial tractor with a 3120 backhoe for sale locally. It also had excessive motion in the vertical swing shaft as well as the sort of leakage you're referring to, and I wanted to get an idea of what I might be dealing with. The manual has an excellent section on rebuilding the swing unit, with instructions and photos. Well worth it.

In the end I passed on the backhoe because all the bushings and pins were too far gone. But I'm keeping my manual because I hope to find another IH backhoe for sale one of these days with the same swing mechanism.

Do a search on this site under IH 3414, or 3120, and you will find a couple other guys rebuilding these units.
