I'm really trying to nickle and dime this '44 H trying to get it running. I'll worry about the good stuff later when I have more breathing room with money. But right now every dime counts.
I bought a pedstal at the salvage yard yesterday, and the tires were shot. He didn't have any usable ones to sell, either. I'll check the other salvage yard this week, but in case that doesn't pan out... what is the cheapest source of tires you know of? I need two 16 x 5.50 up to 6.50

Mike, if you got a Les Schwab tire store in your area, I'd recommend checking them out. They'll probably be the cheapest, and you can't beat their customer service.

What would be better, 5.50 or 6.00? What is the big difference between them?

The 6.00 would be better if you had a loader but for your purpose i would stay with a 5.50 will steer better.

Mike, don't bother with online vendors if you need the tires shipped. The difference between places like Tucker and local shops doesn't even come close to covering shipping these days. There's no point if you save $20 on the tire, but it costs $30 to get it shipped to you.

Besides, it sounds like ANY new tire is out of your budget. If you want tractor fronts, all you can do is keep scrounging. To keep the rims off the floor, old car tires will serve until you save up for tractor tires.

Lots of old cars had 6.00 X 16 tires. Guess that is the same size. Forties like 41 olds, 46-48 ford.

I bought from a local tire guy that I get my truck tires from. Check local first. No shipping. I paid less for mine locally than I could get on line and they were dropped off at my house for free.

Mike,

I hate to say this, but the cheapest (i.e. free) source for 16" tires is your local bike shop. The older Harleys had a 16" tire on the rear. I'd have to dig my oldest hay rack out of the snow to tell you what size they are. I'm guessing that they are 140 (metric) width (~ 5.25"). We have seriously piled the winter squash on that wagon and never had a problem with a tire.

Newer cruiser style bikes have fatter rear tires. While you are there, tell them what you want the tires for, and ask them for the old tubes too. Bike tires are only rated for about 1000 pounds each at 100 mph. If you ever go that fast on your H, let me know.

If you have a L&M Fleet Supply or Fleet Farm around, they have the tires you need. Firestone 3 ribs are about $40.00-$50.00 each plus the tubes.

Tire TOWN has them blems 25-35 they will ship. For what you are usinf this tractor you sure dont need a first line tire a good new blem 6 ply will do a good job. I run 4.00x15 blems for parades and so forth on the B and BN and the A even use the tractors for plowing gardens and cultivatilg sweet corn and other garden stuff. New tubes will only be another 5.00 or so.

Mike: Tucker Tire. They are on ebay all the time. Type in "Farmall Tire(s)". Then, if you don't see the size you need, hit "see sellers other items". If it's still not there, email them and they will put them on ebay. Great folks, and reliable. Chinaman tires for sure, but good quality. Tubes are usually included.

to get it movable at min. cost look for space saver spares at salvage yards some larger cars and wagons used 16 in. tires probably $5.00 or so they usually want to get rid of them as no market and have to go to land fill or tire recycler. also work great when painting ect. no need to wory about over spray dirt ect as you can just trash them when restoration is done

Try tuckertire.com. They have a store on ebay. I just bought two 3 rib front tires for my A for $80 plus $20 shipping. They sent them priority mail and they paid $36.40 for postage. Tires are 4 ply made in China.

Cheapest source for useable tires to get you rolling would be the discard pile at the local tire shop... car tires will work just fine.

Tire Town or Nebraska Tire sells blems pretty reasonable and tubes also. Never had them shipped but its worth the toll free call to find out.
