Check to make sure the Distrubitor is turning.

Had an H that quit running one time, checked the distrubitor and it was not turning. I pulled the front cover and found the timing gear had come off, during a previous repair some where down the line they for got to I believe put in a cotter pin.

Cam gear sounds most likely or broken cam because a head gasket would not probly blow unless you were pulling it hard.If you take the valve cover off and all the valves are moving it might be the key in the cam gear that broke. You could check your timing and see if both valves on number 1 are closed when the marks for TDC are lined up if not at first turn it around again,if not by then its probly the key broke and gear slipped out of time.

Or the cam gear broke and the only two cylinders with closed valves are 1 and 4. Pull the valve cover and look at the valve train while cranking. If it moves, it is then necessary to check its timing against the engine's piston position. Good luck, JimN

This makes sense esp if the hydraulic pump is driven off of the cam gear train.

You could also just pull the distro cap and see if the rotor is spinning over too.

It is possible for a gear to operate on the shaft with a sheared Key. Less likely, but possible. JimN

Most likely blown head gasket. While the head is off have it magnafluxed at the machine shop for cracks.
