Hey,

I have a 1946 farmall H and I was wondering how can you mount an alternator under the hood without modifying it. I tried putting it where the gen was mounted (using the same bracket) But the hood won't fit right. Is there another way to mount the alternator?

Thanks,
Nick

Use 3/8 threaded rod for mounting the alternator to the bracket. I remember that we turned the mounting bracket upside down & had to lengthen the mounting holes about1/2 inch to get the proper belt alignment. We just used a hacksaw blade in the sabre-saw for making the holes longer. For the tightener-- use 2 pieces of 1/4 or3/8 inch thick by 3/4 inch wide steel slightly longer than needed & drill holes in both ends of both pieces[5/16 is large enough] & bend an off-set in one piece the thickness of the material[1/4 or3/8] to make the 2 pieces "flat" when bolted together. Use these bolted pieces like a hinged "V" to tighten the belt. I think we went to a 37 1/2 inch belt, also.

use a "idler pulley". makes it very easy to keep your belt adjusted. use the link and scroll down the pictures. alternator install is toward the bottom. i made the idler useing a pulley for a lawnmower deck.

On an M you can just flip the bracket and mount the Hitachi Alternator without changing the belt. It may work on a H also.

See the archives for my (and Big John's) detailed instructions.

Use one of the little Hithachi alternators.
