Update on M tranny-bad news for me

Hi All , After getting things cleaned up we started checking things out and besides most of the bearings being rough we found the pinion shaft ( input drive shaft ) was beyond repair due to the pilot bearing being disintegrated inside it . I'm surprised the thing worked as long as it did . The problem is it's a M&W shaft for the 9-speed . Anybody have one laying around their shop ? M&W Part # A1 . This will delay the rebuild for a while unless I decide to ditch the nine speed and put it back to stock ( not likely I hope ) or find a good shaft quickly . Any help would be appreciated . ...Randy

Is there a advantage over a 9 speed trans
compaired to the origional from the factory?

I think so . The 9-speed gives 4 extra speeds between 4th and 5th . They are 6 , 7-1/2 , 9 and 11 mph according to the installation manual . The 6 and 7-1/2 mph speeds make good raking speeds for me at times . I just would like a low-low speed too . 1st is sometimes just to fast for baling with a old 14t baler . 9 and 11 mph are reasonable road speeds that don't cause a white knuckle reaction if the road gets rough . These are full throttle speeds so they will change if it's throttled down some . ...Randy

The top transmission shaft and the pilot bearing in an M was always a weak point.It was not uncommon to snap off the end where the shaft was drilled for the bolt thats holds the pilot bearing. IH tryed to fix this on the late M's by using a snap ring to hold the bearing instead of drilling the shaft. The M&W 9 spds were very common in my area,I would say most of the M's had a Charlyn Power steering and a M&W 9 spd and they worked well and lasted well.Three of the M's and the H I have all have the 9spd and they have been trouble free.

Did it wear through both the inner and outer bearing races? If so it wouldn't have stayed in gear. Those bearings have been going out since the inseption of the Farmall M and people weren't replacing the input shafts. Make sure your are not just looking at a tour up outer race, drive it out and replace with the new bearing.

Yeah , it's worn out . There's only about a 1/16th inch of material left under the splines for 5th gear engagement . I think there's supposed to be a snap ring holding the outer race in ? It's gone and so is the groove for it . I might be able to just put in a new outer race and hope 5th doesn't twist the splines off . If I don't find a better shaft I'm going to talk to a machine shop or welding shop to see if it can be built up and re-bored and heat treated . My problem is I don't really know what a M&W shaft is supposed to look like so I'm comparing it to a stock shaft I have . The difference is in total length of the shaft . The M&W is longer overall so either the main shaft is shorter than normal or the recess in the pilot area is normal and that thin area is correct . It would help me to know that . ...Randy

Randy: I need to say this tactfully so that I don't offend anyone, including you. In fact, I'd probably be better off not saying it at all - but, that's not my style. (HAW-HAW!) However..... this is why I have avoided rare, although desireable, options on my tractors. Also, rare model tractors - like the SMTA, for example: grill, hood, linkage, etc.
I wish you the best of luck in finding the part you need. For me, a 9-speed is something to be avoided, unless someone starts making the gears again. Then, it would be totally different. Hope you git 'er goin', though. Somebody needs to keep 'em alive and in view of the public. Might as well be you.

Hi Mike , In this area the 9-speed isn't really rare - it is a little scarce but not rare . The input shaft by itself is rare , with the rest of the gears - no . So you you did say it tactfully ! But you have me pegged wrong . I don't care much about restoring , I work more towards renewing things to use in their work clothes . I leave the fancy paint and polish for those with more money and time than I have . I like the looks of 50 years of wear and tear more than nice paint . But it's got to work good . ...Randy

Me too. Avoid A&W/old aftermarket stuff like the plague.

Was okay when they were in business; just a large PITA now.
