I am thinking about getting a 656/686 to replace my 484D.Never considered anything other than a diesel, BUT... with off road fuel leading gas by about 40 cents anymore maybe I should ask for some advice.First the facts.I will put about 150 hours a year on this tractor.It will be mainly used for: Hi-lifting(2250),planting(56 4 row corn planter and a 510 grain drill) raking hay and moving wagons around the farm.As you can see this tractor should not be stressed.My 966 does all the grunt work. Would it be worth the cheaper purchase price, which looks like about $2000 to $3000 less and pray the gas consumption doesn't catch up for a few years or spend the extra money on the diesel.With fertilizer pushing $700 a ton it would be nice to have the extra cash this spring. Have you thought about a larger 84 series like the 684 or 784. My dad has a 684 he bought new with a 2250 loader and it does all the round bale lifting. We used to have a 56 four row planter and that is all he would plant corn with because it turns nice and short on the end of the row now we have a IH 800 but that is just a bit large for a 684 gotta use the 986. We still use it to plant oats with a 10ft planter no problem. It just has a small 4cyl diesel in it like your 484 and it is easy on fuel but has 20 more horse than yours. Only thing bad is it is lighter than a 656 or 686. But I thought maybe you might like another option. Have a good one!

Thanks guys,always good to hear how other farmers are dealing with or have dealt with the problems I run into.You're right about the 484.It is a wonderful little tractor and it seems to run forever on a tank of fuel but it's too small.Here in south western Pa. it seems like you're always on a hill either going up,down or around one. A 656,66 or 86 is a great match with a 2250 loader and they'll work everything I have here.....except lift my 4x rollover on-land plow,yooyy! Thanks again,I'll keep younz posted. A.J.

Don't forget - less than a year ago, diesel took a big dip and was cheaper than regular gasoline. It's about time for the refineries to stop making heating oil and convert back to making diesel, so who knows what the relative prices of diesel and gas are going to be in a couple of months? It's a wild crap-shoot, but... diesels use a lot less fuel than gas tractors. Tough decision.

Mike, diesel has been higher than gas here since 2003, even off road was higher for a while. It it now pretty much the same a gas just about everywhere exept the bulk dealers. Most of them are cheaper, but then they tack on an extra "fee" of some type make more off of it. Should be a crime.

That is amazing. Regular gasoline here can be bought for $3.09 with a little shopping around. Diesel (road diesel) is $3.98. Crazy. I saw some off-road priced at $3.45 yesterday. The oil companies raise and lower prices all over the country so that no one knows what is "normal" for today's conditions.

In 03 when I firs tgot my f350, diesel was 1.54, gas 1.75 at the place I used to get my fuel. By Novemeber, gas was still in the range of .175 but diesel had gone up over 2.00, and has stayed higher since. At he station I now get my fuel at, gas was 3.04 this morning, regular diesel 3.78, B20 was 3.89. E85 was like 2.70 something, wish I caopuld run that in something. Next truck I get is going to be a Flex Fuel truck.(Only 1 more year, wife says I can get a new truck for my 40th)

It's a good thing they use half the fuel of a gasser. Diesel is 30% higher than gas around here right now. Negates some of the fuel efficiency advantages, especially if you pay more for one to begin with.

Hi A.J., I don't believe you will get any other tractor in the 40HP class to run cheaper than a 484 Diesel. The D179 engine is really economical on fuel if it is running properly.
If you require something in the 60HP class then the 656 series is good.

Yeah,

This fuel situation has everyone changing their way of doing things.

Doubt if I'll even use my 966 or 1066 this year. My 686D go back to being the "big" tractor and the M will do the secondary stuff.

150 hours is a fair amount of hours on a tractor in a year, so don't think you want a gasser.

The 656D, 666D and the 686D run about as cheap as they come and can handle all those odd jobs in stride. Only trouble is, finding a good one ready to go to the field is gonna cost an arm and a leg.

I agree with ya, that 966 is too darned big to be used for small pidley chores. Ya might want to hang on to that little diesel for the real light duty stuff. It runs pretty cheap, doesn't it?

I can speak on the gas vs. diesel in a direct comparison.

When Dad swapped the C291 gas engine in the loader tractor with a D360 diesel I found on ebay of all places, gas consumption on the farm dropped by 300 gallons that year, and diesel only went up by 100 gallons. This was on a loader tractor that normally only ran a few minutes a day.

Diesel will use about 1/2 the amount of fuel a gas will. no points, plugs and plug wires to be replacing. Injectors and fuel pumps though are very expensive when they must be replaced. Moving up to a 656,666, or 686 over a 484 you will proabley be using it more for jobs the 966 was doing because of less fuel consumsion. The 656D will have the 282D which uses glow plugs to start. The 666 will have the D312, and the 686 will have either the D312 or the German D310. All which are very easy on fuel.

Jimmy, I'm with you. My smaller sized diesels use far less fuel. My B250 is far more economical than my H's to run. I didn't even get an H out to work last summer, used the B250 to rake, pull wagons and run the elevator..diesel would have to be twice the price before I use the H's for that kind of work.

INTERESTING! I've been kinda looking around for a 656 to add to my collection. I never thought about fuel consumption (which is rather stupid of me not to have considered). Are y'all saying I should get comparable fuel costs between my M and a 656D / 666D / 686D? AND I would get better power output when I needed to grunt-it! WOW!
