I damaged the threads on the front steering post trying to get the drive gear loose.

I'd like to clean up the threads with a thread cutter. Does anyone know the size of the threads? Can you rent a set of thread cutters or do you need to go to a shop to have the work done? I haven't been able to come up with anything so far. (Also sort of embarrased to ask around)

Right now I've got the nut forced on but it's not really griping very well. I put a pin through the shaft and cups in the top of the nut. But now wonder if maybe I shouldn't fix it right.

Thanks for the help.

I'm thinking 7/8 or maybe 3/4 fine threads---we put a new gear on the 450 last year, & a person just doesn't note what size the threads are until trouble arises. Could even be 1 inch fine--15/16???

A thread file is designed to do that task. They are available from quality tool supply houses. They are square and have 8 different thread pitches on them. Several can be purchased to deal with large sizes, and small sizes, as well as Metric threads. It does take a bit of patience, but it works well. JimN

if your talking about the plug that holds the worm gear and bearing in place, its a pipe thread, 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 inch.

No embarrassment Larry! I had a similar problem when the nut unscrewed and dropped off the camshaft on my Super M. The cam gear then flopping around loose inside the timing cover beat the $)#*@ out of the threads on the end of the camshaft. Could not even get the nut started back onto it.

However couple of quality hours with a triangular jeweler's file and some patience I was able to clean up the mangled threads sufficiently get the nut to thread back on.

Depending on how bad the threads are beat you may be able to do the same to your pivot shaft...
