Hi All , My nine speed input shaft pilot bearing went bad and ate the end out of the input shaft . A couple of questions - Does the nine speed use a pilot bearing outer race requiring a snap ring to hold it in postion ? My shafts snap ring groove is gone or it never had one . Has anyone ever used Loctite stud and bearing mount to stick one in place or anything like it ? If I tried it would it hold ? Or would the best solution be to talk to a machine shop and see if a groove could be cut in the shaft in the remaining material ? Thanks ! ...Randy

I believe the Locktite will work if (and only if) the bearing and shaft are in a loose press fit condition. This means that the bearing must be tight enough on the shaft to be snug enough to require more than hand pressure to assemble it to the shaft. A PVC pipe and a block of wood to drive it on. The material provides shear resistance and will prevent motion along the shaft, but it has little capability to hold radial loads. It basically fills tiny gaps between the micro surfaces of the two metal parts without the ability to be the substitute shaft itself. Plasma spray welding of the surface, and regroving the shaft for the snap ring is both reasonable to expect to work, and modest incost to fix a part you cannot find. It also is not destructive to the shaft if done by a qualified applicator. JimN

Hi Jim , Thanks for the info ! I wasn't entirely clear I see as I re-read what I wrote last . I was wondering if it would hold the outer race in position inside the input shaft . As for the plasma spray welding - I don't know if anyone around does anything like that so I guess next week I'll get more phone time in . Thanks ! ...Randy

It will hold it only if the outer race is tight in the bore. If you do it, rough upthe surface of the outer race to allow it to have "tooth". dont make it smaller, just not polished.
another optionwould be to have the bore ground out to a larger O.D. bearing size while keeping the I.D. the same. Finding the bearing will take some time, but may be cheaper. JimN
