Does anyone know at what S/N International changed the front cover bolting patterns for the distributor adapter? Hmmm. Maybe I should elaborate a little more. I've got a 1951 M:

  1. I've heard that for very late M's, a SM live hydraulic pump will bolt right up.

  2. I've heard that for early M's, a SM live hydraulic pump will NOT bolt up.

  3. So, at what S/N did International make the change?

  4. I've heard that it's easy to fill the old hole, and redrill and tap a new hole, to put a SM pump on an earlier M.

  5. I've heard that the best course of action is to replace the front plate to get the SM bolt pattern on an M.

  6. (Opinion) Is the first option really as cheesy as it sounds?

  7. I've heard that a specially hardened cam gear is needed for the SM pump, so as not to strip the timing gears.

  8. I've heard of people going for years with the old (less hardened) cam gear without problems. (Probably not in my case with a front loader)

  9. I've heard that the newer hardened gear was actually in later M's after a specific S/N.

  10. So, at what S/N did International make the change to the cam gear?

Does that seem to cover all the bases? I know I'm forgetting something.

D/B/K: I've heard the moon was made of green cheese. HAW-HAW!
If you go to the case/ih website for parts, you will see that the front case for the M changed at serial number 228082 and newer. If you don't already know how, you need to learn how to work that site.
Many, many, many guys on this forun will attest to the fact it is easy to fill and drill if you have an old front cover.
As for the timing gear, I did not bother to look it up to see if there was a change. Time for you to learn to do that (case ih.com) There is a great deal of debate on that topic; some guys swear their 1941 M has borne up well under a live pump for years and other guys swearing that the gear will not hold up, and other guys swearing the gear never changed, and other guys just enjoying a chance to swear at almost anything! Good luck.

Wow! I haven't thought of that green cheese thing in years! Hee Hee.

Looks like S/N 228082 was in 1950, so I should be OK for the front casting in 1951. I don't have the S/N plate, but everything on my tractor has either a U or V casting code, and the engine S/N is FBKM238979X1B.

THANK YOU!
