H Upper Bolster?

Hello All!

Question for everyone, in my ongoing tinkering on my now herd of three tractors.
I took the front grill off of one of my H's today, just to clean out the giant mouse nest (Ill post pictures sometime) that has pretty much ruined the radiator shutters that were in there. Anyway, I see that there is grease or oil that has run down out of the upper steering box.
Searching, I have seen a few posts that this apparently isnt too uncommon, and people suggest either filling with regular grease, a mix of grease and gear oil, or some corn head grease from JD. I would assume these suggestions are because the oil seals are shot.
How big of a deal is it to change the oil seals out for this steering box? Is it a real chore? Or is it something I can accomplish fairly easily? I just figured I would ask before I run to the store to get either oil seals or corn head grease :)

Thanks,

~Bug

usually the bushings in the bolster wear, causing the seal to fail. there are upper and lower bushings in the bolster, along with a bearing on the bottom. its not too bad of a job to change em to rebuild the front end. carter and gruenwald has a rebuild kit for about 150 dollars or so, has the bushings, bearings and seals to re- do the whole front bolster. bushings are kind of a bugger to get in, but i used a plate from my sleeve pullers to pull the new bushings in.

So it sounds like grease is the way to be on this guy.... (That sounds pretty extensive just for a seal....Oy...)

Does someone have a corn head grease part number by chance?

I'm filling mine with Corn Head grease later this week, as has been suggested. I haven't replaced the seal, but don't plan to if the grease does the trick.

Bug - Replacing that pivot shaft seal is not difficult. But requires some extensive disassembly: The lower bolster must be removed, then the steering worm wheel pulled. Finally the pivot shaft must be dropped from the front end. And the seal itself can be tough to install due to it's position deep up in the "crotch" of the upper bolster casting.

Further my experience has been that even when a new seal is installed, depending on the condition of the pivot shaft seal surface the new seal may still leak too.

Now I simply pack the steering box full of good quality grease (corn head grease or similar). Even with old seal I've never had one leak a drop. And the grease lubes the worm and sector just fine - a couple of mine have been on grease for 10+ years now.
