i am having trouble getting my 6 to whirl over fast enough to start. when it is running the gauge shows a good charge. i've used a booster box to start it, even then it sometimes will slowly turn over, then it will turn over fast again. loose connection somewhere? bad brushes in starter? thank you

In addition to internal started problems, a poor connection can cause the problem you are describing. A poor connection will cause heat to be generated when the current passes through it and the heat can expand the parts making a better connection so that it will again crank faster. After cranking for a little bit, feel the connections to see if any have gotten warm.

One other thing that can cause this is antifreeze contamination of the oil. I had this happen on a 686 diesel. The engine would be so tight that the started could not turn it over but if you used a bar to turn the engine just slightly it would then crank just fine. As soon as it sat for a few minutes it would be seized again.

If it still has the 6 volt system I would install
00 battery cables with soldered ends. Clean all connections until shiny. Hal
