Hi, when I shut it off on gas it wants to keep trying to run and turn backwards, is this a timming problem, it also seems to be running a little fast, but the only control on gas side is the choke, it has no idle settings, thanks Joe

these tractors are supposed to be idled and cooled and shut down on DIESEL!absolutly no reason to go to gas, the gas is for starting and thats it. diesel at idle also cools faster than gas.people say they switch to gas to clean the plugs.total nonsence, there is no diesel combusion at the plugs!as i have said before get her started and switch to diesel then take out the spark plugs while its running.you will see you dont need them other than for starting.some body a while back said there tractor ran without piston rings, well i know this tractor will RUN WITHOUT SPARK PLUGS!

Chuck it starts up good smokes black till it clears out good, just keep pushing the chock in till it is all the way in and it is running good, just thought it acts like it is out of time a little, guess as long as it starts good should leave timing alone and shut it off on diesel, thanks to all, joe

Joe, change the plugs or check the gap. I've never done this on the gas start diesel plugs, but I would think it could be done. Timing shouldn't be an issue if it runs on gas. If you don't have a spark the gas won't ignite, regardless of timing. The plugs are probably staying hot enough to keep igniting the ful.

Shut it down on the diesel side, less likely to forget to set the lever back to diesel and warping a valve.

I agree, shut it down on diesel and forget the gas part. Dad had a WD-9 and it was always shut down on diesel and never had a problem with it. Shutting it down on gas is being way over cautious. Of course this means AFTER it has idled without a load for a few minutes to cool down if it has just been pulling a full load. If it has been on the road from a field to the yard, then the cool down isn"t needed.

Is there a shutoff on the gas tank/line? Just let the carb run dry and it will not continue to run in any direction.

Is the running fast issue your opinion, or compared to other WD9s that you've heard run?

The engine needs to run at a high idle to get warmed up enough for diesel operation. It'll never get there loping along at a low idle.

That was my thought on idling, any thoughts on getting it to die without backfiring and running backwards, thanks Joe

I agree with the comments to check for carbon or hot spots on the plugs, but there is no throttle plate in the carb, it runs flat out on a very small venturi. Shut it off after cool down on diesel. Diesels run cooler at idle than gasoline ever did. Leaving it on diesel also keeps the third valve closed. Do it. JimN

Joe, I have three gas start diesels, haven't seen one backfire or run backwards. How well does it start? I would guess it must be out of time or have some problem. Does it blow smoke rings? When they run right they do it really well. Good luck, Chuck
