Super A Hydrulic Pump Problems

I disassembled my hydraulic pump last night only to discover the shaft has a .001” – .0015” groove worn in it by the seal (the later model front cover with the O-ring type seal). I tried to find a speedy sleeve for it today, but the only thing I could find was .002” too large in diameter.

What is the fix for this or where can I find a rrepair sleeve? I thought about spray weld and machine, but I can’t find anyone in my area with the equipment for that type of repair.

Greg

Napa or your Case/IH dealer should have a speedi-sleeve. Hal

Hi Hal,

Those were the first two places I checked. This is strange, I've read past postings of others that have made this repair on their pump shaft. The diameter of the shaft I need to sleeve is .621" and the first repair sleeve in that neighborhood is .623", which is obviously .002" too big.

Call Dalton Bearsing in GA at 706-226-2022. They sell Chicago Rawhide products and should have a speedi-sleeve. Hal

Greg, I had trouble here in finding someone who was willing to try and weld cast-iron. I have a short crack in my crank-pulley, and since it's a balanced piece, I didn't want the piece to break off, (though it likely wouldn't amount to a hll of beans), but I found a shop that was willing to do it, but I'm getting it back tomorrow so I don't know how he did yet. Is this the problem in your area, them not wanting to weld cast?

It needed a speedy-sleeve too, and I got one at NAPA, though I'm sure you've checked there.

BTW, did you find pistons for your block? I asked, but the tractor salvage by me didn't have them. Or were you able to fix the originals?

Hi Pete,

The part I need to repair is the hyd. pump drive gear. It is worn where the o-ring seals the pump. It is a machined steel part, not cast.

No, I haven't found any touch control pistons yet, but I have a friend in the tractor parts search business looking nationwide. A machinist friend is cutting an oversized key way in my steering shaft and the front end should be going back together soon.

Where are you in your project? Greg

Any good bearing place will have that sleeve, or at least be able to get it in a day or two. Welding takes a special process, not all shops can do that. Brazing will not last.

I have a later model Cessna pump on my Super C and tracked down a kit (NLA through IH) with the help of a local Eaton dealer. They refered me to Spencer Industries in Kent, WA. 253-395-3701. Maybe they have a sleeve that will fit.

Otherwise, do you have any race shops nearby ? The guy at the machine shop who builds motors for the local sportsman and stock car racers pointed me to crankshaft grinders who do spray welding...

Any chance of finding an o-ring that is 0.001" thicker ?

Greg

Greg (that's a great name!), I'll give Spencer Ind. a call this morning, thanks.

I have a call into a machine shop to see if the owner knows of anyone that can spray weld and turn the part for me.

I hadn't thought of an oversized o-ring, I'll look into that too.

Thanks again,
Greg
