HELP!! 504 Hydraulic System Noise

I have a hydraulic system noise on my IH 504 - it's high pitch buzz coming from the flow divider area on my IH 504. The noise came after replacing the pump with a 17 gpm IH rebuilt. All systems work, but noise is really annoying. There wasn't a noise before, but the pump was shot when I bought the tractor. The IH parts man said it could be coming from the oil cooler relief valve. I bought a used one - for $70 - but still have the noise (a new one costs over $330!). Any help that anyone can give will be greatly appreciated.

I don't think it is a filter issue unless you have a loader with a second filter that is plugged. I found one under the loader frame.

You might try putting the old oil cooler relief valve back in and see what happens. Could be the flow divider. Does yours have an adjusting screw in the middle between the two front openings? Could have too much flow going to the power steering. That adjusts the flow to the power steering and affects how much is then bypassed. You might check the pilot valve. I think the buzz is associated with a bypass issue. Something I thought of after looking at an earlier post, get a metal rod or pipe has a homemade or buy an automotive stethoscope and try to pinpoint the exact location of the buzz.

In trying to identify my 2606 industrial and its hydraulic problems, I looked at the parts catalog for everything from the 460 to the 860 and between. On the industrials I did find an alternative high capacity hyd. filter. The dealer said they haven't carried those in years. When I cross referenced them to wix at www.wixfilters.com I found that the high cap filter was over an inch thicker. When I pulled my filter, it was a standard one and there is not room to put in a filter an over an inch thicker. Mine has duel pumps with a 9 gpm and a 17 gpm for the loader and backhoe that all goes through the standard filter feeding the pumps. The 3000 loader had an auxilliary filter but it was upstream.

I assume you topped off the oil after the pump change?

Yes, I topped the system off and put about a gallon more. Also changed the filter.

I think that ya have way more pump then the system can handle . First off the filter when new really made to only handle around 14 GPM the flow divider does not know where to send the extra oil . Ya i know that ya can put the bigger pumps on them BUT did upgrade the oil cooler ?? are you using the extra flow . There is a lot to take into account when adding more flow . A good 12 GPM pump will do a lot. Another thing is that the passage ways that are cast into the system have not changed in size so now instead of flow you have Extra pressure and this is making the pressure relief work overtime.

According to the serial number plate, it did come with a 17 gpm. However, the one I pulled was a 12 gpm. I didn't upgrade the oil cooler.

Dunno,

Just an idea. Yank the bypass on the filter and see if it then kills the noise.

Maybe that pump is overloading the filter.

Yea, that's a good point. According to parts book, the tractor with my serial number, with a 17 gpm pump should have a bigger filter housing cover and filter to help with the volume with the new filters they make today. The IH dealer didn't think that was an issue, though. Pulling the bypass would be an easy check though.

Boy I dunno Andy,

Even with newer tractors, the bottleneck is almost always at the filter.

If yours already has the bigger cover and filter, you'd think it would handle it tho.

Dunno, think I'd give 'er a try anyway just to isolate the noise and give ya a leg up on what's going on.

You may be getting cavitation because your pumps inlet pressure is dropping to low. Very bad for pump life if not stopped. If your filter is not clogged, you may have to find some way to decrease the restricked flow to the pump.
