Farmall A Final Drive Gear Pans Empty??

I serviced my tranny and differential today and when I dropped the pans on the final drive gears, they were empty. Is this the way it is supposed to be? I did a search on the forum for the proper servicing sequences and I read where I need to fill the pans when I reinstall them. Could the oil just have leaked out? There may have been a half cup in the bottom of each pan (with a lot of sludge). Thanks everyone, Larry

I had the same problem with my B when I bought it. Just filled them up, and it was ok. Maybe not looked at for 50 years? Steve

if i read part of your post right you said :I read where I need to fill the pans when I reinstall them.: just put the pan on and then take the hex plug out that is just above the pan on the casting and fill through there it would be kinda a pain to mount the pans full of oil. Well at least it would be for me :D

You make a good point, Terry.

I thought about pointin' that out, but decided there were two ways to read it and said, nawww..... That's a lot of the challenge participatin' on a board like this. You're never quite sure what the other person knows. You don't want to leave somethin' out that might make more problems for them. But you don't want to offend them by pointin' out somethin' that was obvious to them.

Right on SCOTTY there is way too many replies that arent correct on problems. People who dont know answers just dont avail themselves of an original owners manual and get way too many "ideas" on how to fix a problem. I sure glad that i dont have to go on the advice that appears on this forum.

Larry: Examine the pans for cracks. I have seen this, and the tractor I saw it on had no physical dammage I could see.

They should each be holding about three pints.

Not many places for it to leak. Have you got any significant oily crud built up at the caps for the bull gear bearing, or the top shaft. How about around the pan gaskets? Where the most crud is is likely where you lost it.

Mostly crude around the gaskets, but not 3 pints worth. Could be that the last owner did not fill when he serviced?

that might have been me scotty. been quite a while since i changed the fluid on my b, i forgot about the plugs on the drop housings to fill em. after someone corrected my post, i had to go out in the barn and crawl under the tractor. then i remembered the fill plugs. dang hard gettin old!!!

I had my Super-A I bought used, and I had never had the pan off or gotten into the axle, and had been using for 3 years, until a big-*ssed washer that must have been dropped into the bull-gear pan finally caught a tooth on the bull gear and got driven right through the pan. Luckily it was still dripping oil when I backed it onto concrete or I may not have noticed for awhile.

Wasn't much doubt about why THAT pan was out of oil!
