If the tractor was built with live pto there should have been the letter P added to suffix on serial plate. Either it failed to be stamped at factory or the live pto was added later. IH didn't use the name all fuel. Kerosene tractors used a different suffix letter than the A thats on yours.

The suffix A is for TA delete. There should be a X17 for distillate or a X3 for kerosene on the tag. Distillate was offered all the way through the 450 series tractors but the kerosene option was dropped sometime during the 1940's so yours would not be a kerosene. No IHC tractors were all fuel. Yours is a distillate.

Sorry to disagree Harold, but the X suffixs were not used on SMTA. The A stands for Distillate fuel and a B would indicate Kerosene fuel equiped which was offered. No letter was used to show that tractor came without a T/A. If tractor was built without a T/A and with a independent PTO a P suffix letter was used.

Don, Sorry to say IH didn't keep that good a records, IHs records are sketchy at best. In the IH Super M stage III tractors AKA...(SM-TA series) the total # didn't break down those Stage III tractors that came "Factory TA Delete" or "With TA.
The "Factory Delete" opition tractors carried the round Super M-TA badge MINUS the wing!!! That is the way they came from the factory.
Also it could be said that a TA-Delete tractor is just a SM.....possibility, BUT!!!!! A "Factory Delete" Stage III will still be on the longer Stage III chasis, longer torque tube, longer hood.
So a Stage III, TA-delete is still technically a SM-TA. Again to answer your question there are NO real accurate records on #s. Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

If there is no more letters in the ser#, it is a factory TA delete. Had a High Crop that way, The block will also have an A stamped in the ser # of the engine. Most of these tractors were shipped to the south.

Don't know if the information is available on how many distillate SMTA tractors without a T/A were built. May be something in the IH records that the Wisconsin Historical society has, but not to my knowledge. A at end of your serial # stands for distillate fuel tractor. Tractor must also have a non independent PTO or no PTO going by the serial # you posted. Looks like the tractor was assembled in August 54. I would guess tractor was probably sold in the south.

Then you dont have a SMTA you have instead just a SM. They were built before the SMTAs. What do the cast codes say and what is the serial#.

Gene, I'm pretty sure there were SMTA TA delete tractors. The decal on the front, under the rib, was a circle without the Torque amplifier "wing" going out behind. That and a dual fuel would be relatively rare. JimN

Wouldnt be the first time that the wrong decals were put on a tractor cause if it aint got a TA it aint a SMTA. Remember that the SMs were built before the TAs.

Gene,

The SMTA was available with or without TA. A large persentage of SMTA's sold in the Mississippi Delta were sold without TA's as were lots of later model Farmalls also. It is still a SMTA without a TA.

There were MTA's sold in '54 without a TA, I don't know why they didn't call them a SM either.
