My Grandpa owned 5 Farmalls while he farmed, and I can remember 3 of them to some degree, all H's or Super H's. The wide-front Super C and narrow-front 300 were traded before I was born. The ones I remember were: A narrow front H/SH that he bought at an auction and traded with his Gehl Chop-All about a year later for a new Fox 2250 (about '79 - I would have been 6), a wide front H/SH that he traded in '80 for a Ford 4600 that I still have, and the narrow-front stage 1 Super H that he still had when he retired. My question is, on the wide front H or Super H, there were some differences from the one I know for sure was a Super, and I was wondering if they mean it (the one with the wide front) was just an H. The Super had a plastic pre-cleaner, friction disk on the throttle, and the tool box was just above the pto shield. The one with the wide-front had a glass jar style precleaner, notches to hold the throttle position, and a toolbox mounted between the headlights. Are any of these indicators of age and being a Super or not? Thanks.

The friction throttle, glass precleaner jar, toolboxes, etc. can are not unique to the Super H - there's plenty of H's out there with one or more these optional items.

A few quick SH spotting signs:

Serial number. Only a Super H will have an "SH" serial number prefix.

An SH will always have disk brakes (identified by cast iron brake covers). All but the last few production H's will have band brakes (stamped steel brake covers).

On the SH he last character of the major casting date codes will be "Y" or "Z", indicating for 1954 and '54 respectively. Casting date codes earlier in the alphabet indicate a regular H.

Note the first prduction run (about 19,000 or so) of the Super H have the battery under the gas tank, same as a regular H. Only later production (so-called "stage 2", live hydraulic equipped) SH's have the battery beneath the seat.

Thanks for the info. The tractors are long since gone from the area as far as I know, except for the one I know is a Super H. That one is about 7 or 8 miles from me, has serial number SH 19xx, and disk brakes. DOn't remember if the other 2 had disk brakes or not. All 3 had the battery under the gas tank, so the 2 that were traded years ago could either have been Hs or stage 1 Supers.

If the battery is under the seat, then it was a Super H.
