Hi all,
I took a picture of our International Harvester milk truck. It was originally a milk truck, but someone else turned it into a beer truck, the sides of the truck say "THE HAPPY TAPPER". this truck is refrigrated. I can't remember, but I think it is a 1964 or 1965 truck, not sure though. I don't know what model it is. Can anyone tell me what model it is or how I can find out? We bought it at a auction several years ago and it has been sitting in our yard since. We have never run the truck, but we were told that it ran good, but it needs a starter new drive and tires. Otherwise, it looks pretty good for it's age. We were told that these refrigrated trucks are very rare, if anyone can give me any info on this truck, I'd appreciate it. I might try to get it going in the spring. If it was running, what do you think it would be worth? I have no idea, I've never seen another refrigrated IH truck. Thanks, Andy.

First time I"ve seen one of them for many years. Dad"s uncle and first cousins ran a milk company for nearly 80 years. The old man was my grandfather"s brother and they started on the family farm around 1915. Initially two of the six brother"s were partners. One of them died in 1944 and so, Uncle Bill and his son"s went solo from that point forward and over the years they had LOTS of delivery trucks.

When I was a kid in the early 60"s, they gave us an IH truck very similar to this one pictured...I always thought it was a "56 model. Anyway...it had sit down and stand up gas and brake pedals....so the driver could just hop in and motor away without getting in the seat! The reason they got rid of that truck so soon....it was maybe 5 years old...it had an automatic transmission and they could never keep it in service. Finally they parked it. It had an OHV 6, I plainly recall that. I never seen it under power, but it was all there. We used it for a camper on the river bank!We hooked the old Oliver to it and moved down where we wanted it. Finally, in the late 80"s, the property sold and the old truck...shot full of holes and pretty rusty...was junked.

Thanks. My Dad and I looked for the ID tag and it says this truck is a 1961 model, it says "MODEL:" on the tag, but there is nothing stamped there.

Andy.

That's definitely an S-series, which makes it 1956-57 vintage. More than likely, it's an S-140 Milkmaster, which was a special chassis with a dropped frame between the front and rear springs. The original engine would be a BD-series 6-cylinder, probably a BD-240...but it might be a BD-220, or it might be a BD-264 if you're really lucky. IH made the 140 Milkmaster model in the L and R series as well, but the 140--which was available in a straight frame as well-- was discontinued in the early 1960's.

There shouldbe a manufacturer's plate with the serial number, model number, engine size/horsepower, and GVW, somewhere on the body...I'd suggest checking the kick panel area, ahead of the doors, first.

Thanks, it is a 1961 according to the insurance card in the truck.

Looks like your truck could be as new as at least 1959, which is the printing date on this brochure. I wasn't aware they carried the S-series doghouse over to the AB-120 Metroette...thought it stopped in '57 when the A-series was introduced. Learn something new every day, I guess.

Neat looking truck.

The best thing you can do is get to an IH truck website where there"s a better chance of finding folks who might know more. Here"s a couple places to start:

Link

This site also has a classic trucks page

i have no idea what that would bring, its the first one ive seen, and im 50, as straight as that old girl is ,if it were mine id fix it up then take it to a few shows and see what kind of offers i got, maybe if the refer unit could be got working you could sell refreshments out of it at the shows, might also be fun at a church picnic ect.

I had a milk cow but never a milk truck which would be better even if you get both milk and beer.

That is a model S. Probably S-120 or S-130 built in 1956 or 57.
