I have a farmall 140 with some noise in the gears mostly 3rd and and 4th gears so I removed the shifter and found the gear teeth rusted and pitted I guess from sitting and collecting moisture ,have others seen this before? and what can be done? Can you still buy the counter shaft and slider gears ? or just look to salvage parts or just live with it. Just drives me nuts to here gear whine.

I have added STP or Lucas oil treatment and it quieted down these transmissions a little

They weren't especially quiet to start with.

Add to that the years of hard wear in one or two gears (think forty years of cultivatin' a quarter-section farm), and you'll have noise from the coastin' sides of those gears, whether you're coastin' against them or just runnin' light.

Jim is spot on about the pitting likely not contributin' to the problem, as long as it isn't severe enough to change the gear profile.

It might help to think of the noise as a little celebration of all the work the tractor has done, kinda like a tied-up dog or a penned-up horse kickin' up their heels when they get to run loose.

Jim nailed it.
I spent the last 5 years restoring a 1958 140.
Went thru tore all the transmission a part, measured the gears replaced all bearings and seals.
Long story short.Take it on its maiden voyage and sounds like it did before I started(but much cleaner).-(LOL)
I will probably try Jims suggestion with the different oil and additive

The whine may be pretty normal. Pits do not make much noise unless they have destroyed the tooth profile. One partial solution is to use heavier oil, Multiwt 90-120, and Positrack additive for chevrolet hypoid differentials (two doses for that amount of oil) There are no guarantees, I would bet replacing the gears will not make it quieter. Others will chime in (no pun intended) JimN

I would drain the old fluid out and then put around 2 gal of diesel fuel in and drive around a little then drain that out and refill with some 150 gear oil. That will probably clear lots of noise. Those trannys werent quiet when new due to the straight cut gears. Wouldnt hurt to drain the final drives and put new in there also.
